  1. never read it but i work at the hospital its about.
  2. I actually know how you feel. I really want to start a family with my husband. But i just took a new job on a pretty intense cardiac floor. I was on a medical floor before and went through all the horror stories people say about nursing (no help, non supportive coworkers, terrible hours, bad manager) and I was unhappy. I was actually told by my charge nurse my to get pregnant. The floor I'm on now seems great but there's a lot for me to learn. I feel like I'm starting over again. But all I want right now is to have a baby.
  3. people think that we have great hours and work when we feel like it. its different than the business world but we do all shifts but switching from day to night and working weekends and holidays is no picnic.
  4. I wish I could help. I currently work in a union hospital and just got offered a job in a nonunion hospital. I'm not sure what to do. Both are in Boston. I've been a nurse about a year. From working in a union hospital, new people are low man on the totum poll. I work any and all shifts. Two 12s and two 8s. Sometimes switching from night to day and back again in one week. New people are last to get summer vacation and first to work holidays (on my floor). Also if you want to move ahead like get a job in an ICU, everything depends on senority. However I have been told in nonunion you get more patients and often make less money. I really don't know. I kind of think regardless of union or not it depends on your manager and coworkers and culture of the hospital.
  5. Do you work at BMC?
  6. I have been working as a day/night rotator for about a year now. I do 2 twelves and 2 eights. One week nights the next week days. sometimes both in one week. Sometimes 6 -8 night shifts in a row. I think my boss is trying to kill me. I'm looking for a new job but I'm in Boston (one of the few places without a shortage), which is why my manager gets away with torture. Anywho i never feel good when Im on nights. I've always been a morning person.
  7. i sat at lot when i worked as a cna while in nursing school. it was great when i was allowed to read or study but some nurses would want me to literally not take my eyes off the pt even if they were sleeping! i would always feel so trapped. sitting is one thing i dont miss.
  8. i just got hired for a day night rotater position at a big boston medical center. i dont think any new grads get to be pernament days or nights in boston. its going to suck having to switch back and forth but i'll learn a lot and starting base pay is almost $29 per hour. So i really cant complain even though i hate staying up all night and am definately a morning person. i'm just happy to be able to work at my job.
  9. i just accepted a day/night rotater position. my first night shift is in two days. any tips for staying awake or being able to bouce back to a day shift two days later..
  10. i took it yesterday and it shut off at 75. Two years of nursing school, one kaplan course and 3 weeks of intense studying ended in 60 mins and 75 questions. i actually didnt think it was that bad but whose knows. i find out tomorrow if i passed. It would be really embarassing to fail at 75.
  11. In Boston an LPN/LVN is unheard of in any hospital. I have just graduated from nursing school with my associates and I already have a BS. I'm having an awful time finding a job. I know a girl who graduated with a BSN from a pretty prestigious college and had to work in a nursing home for a while before landing a job in a hospital. So I hear you loud and clear, THERE IS NO NURSING SHORTAGE, at least not in massachusetts.
  12. Congrats on your new job. my interview is actually in a NICU, i obviously dont have much experience in one except for a few times during my maternity and pedi rotations. i actually applied on a whim and was shocked when they called me. i have applied to community hospitals on med surg floors who have given me attitude when i call about my application status. This a big Boston hospital (who will go nameless because i dont want to jinx myself). Thinking about this interview makes me kind of feel nauseous. haha thanks for the advice. i need to study for this interview.
  13. congrats!!!! i have an interview for a nicu as a new grad in a few weeks, any advice?
  14. i'm graduating in may and i have an interview for a new grad position in an nicu coming up, any advice? i really want this job.
  15. I was one who chose a specialty after graduating in December (NICU) but about half of my class went into med-surg and seem to be very happy with it. For those of you who are waiting to take NCLEX...good luck. I just recently passed mine and know what you are feeling.
  16. YES!!!!!! Except for pedi and maternity.
  17. I have an interview coming up for a new grad position in an ICU in one of the big Boston hospitals. I'm super nervous but excited at the same time, any tips?
  18. I work at carney as a nurse's aide (one more year of school!). They just closed a floor and they dont treat their nurses and other staff very well. Dont work there, I'm currently looking for a new job.
  19. I'm almost done with an AD in nursing. I also have a BA in psych. Many people have told me that boston hospitals wont hire new grads with associates degrees even if you already have a bachelors. I live right next to the city, and have always wanted to work in town. I would also like to think that someone who has gone to college for 6 years with 2 degrees should be able to work where ever she wants. Does anyone know anything about this or have any advice???
