2016 marks forty years since I first became an R.N. I say "retired R.N." in my occupation, though this may just be a hiatus from nursing, a time to pause to reflect. I would really love to see a more holistic model of care in nursing/medicine, and have given thought to holistic nursing certification. And as a chatty girl, I may look into writing/blogging about nursing and holistic healthcare. I first started in Labor and Delivery for two years, followed by five years in the OR at the same hospital where I trained, Iowa Methodist Medical Center (which has since been swallowed by Unity Point). My nursing education there was excellent. I spent over a year as a traveling nurse in five locations: Christiansted, St. Croix; Louisville, KY; Trenton, NJ; Sarasota, FL; lastly Key West, FL, where I met and married my husband. I have worked both OB and OR in the years that followed, in hospital and office settings. For twelve years I was fortunate enough to be able to stay at home raising two children. My final position was nine years at a busy surgical center in Northern Virginia, sequestered in a cubicle working the phone and computer doing pre-op interview. I turned 60 last year, and that milestone was a wake-up call to find what is truly important in life.
