  1. Becoming a nurse for the money...

If you already have a BA in Communications, you could get into a 3rd tier Law School and get your Juris Doctorate in 3 years? Of course, new grad attorneys are a lot worse off than new grad RNs right...
  2. Becoming a nurse for the money...

I think he's going to be in for a wakeup call once he graduates, unless he plans to become an NP or a nurse manager. Though the average NP or nurse manager doesn't even make that kind of money right...
  3. Tell me if this is the norm in your er!

Now that you mention it, though, I'm sure they can refuse a medic if they want a longer wait. I'm sure people refuse PAs and NPs and residents in place of a "real doctor" all the time and that's...
  4. Tell me if this is the norm in your er!

Perhaps? I'd be pretty comfortable with simple suturing from a paramedic, myself. They're a highly skilled group; they're even allowed to intubate. Suturing isn't really rocket science, imo. In...
  5. Anyone Starting At UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing?

Congrats, at the orientation she told a guy that you can transfer to full-time next semester if you want
  6. Tell me if this is the norm in your er!

Paramedics are allowed to suture in the field, and in many ERs the techs are Paramedics (Children's in Chicago only hires EMT-Ps as techs, for example), so I don't see why they couldn't suture
  7. need some advice about nursing school!

Something to consider (since I am someone who has a previous BA before I went into nursing): if you finish your first bachelors before pursuing a nursing degree, you will be ineligible for all...
  8. Is the Nursing Shortage Declining?

I shouldn't be this pessimistic, though: There IS still a shortage in my area. I am only responding from what I hear from around the country, see on this message board, and I do see FEWER postings...
  9. Is the Nursing Shortage Declining?

The way I see it, there IS a shortage of nurses, but hospitals would rather continue to pay their executives and management and top docs high 6-figure and 7-figure salaries than to fill that shortage...
  10. Wondering if 50 is too old to go to RN school

Hell no! You'll probably retire at, what, 65? So you've got 15 more years to work? 15 years is a long time. .
  11. Are you a competitive Nursing Student?

Sure, a C is still passing, but it's not going to get me into a competitive graduate program
  12. Why do you want to become an OB/gyn? Since this is a nursing board, of course we have to steer you toward looking into Midwifery (as a career goal AND for your women's healthcare
  13. FAINTING...what made you drop?

I almost fainted during my CNA clinicals, oddly, because I am not typically squeamish. I was helping and RN who was irrigating a particularly nasty pressure ulcer (to the bone; you could see all the...
  14. Anyone Starting At UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing?

I have her email address if you want that as well. She's pretty fast about getting back to
  15. Nursing school and childcare

My son is about that age and is in daycare for about that long (I currently work 8:30-5, I will be quitting to go to school full-time in the fall). It was really much harder on ME than him. He...
  16. HELP! How to become a L&D Nurse

Have you looked into becoming a doula in the meantime? That might
  17. Nursing is stupid?

When I was initially applying to nursing school I wanted to be a midwife (before I had my baby--now being on call doesn't sound so hot!). When I asked a physician I worked with for a recommendation...
  18. I am very upset....

OH, could you possibly take the skills test sooner somewhere else in case you don't pass? Do you live near Chicago? I'm sure they offer it at the city colleges more often. That's where I took
  19. I am very upset....

Ugh. Well, I took the CNA test a billion years ago in Illinois. It was really, really easy, if that helps. The only thing that people had trouble with was blood pressures, so practice, practice,...
  20. Do you bring your laptop to class/lecture?

Hmmm. I've been thinking about doing this as well. My laptop (I have the old MacBook Pro) is so heavy though; I'm going to wait and see if we need to carry any of our books around
  21. No externship = huge disadvantage?

I might be completely wrong, but I'd personally think a PCT position would look better than a summer
  22. Littmann Master Classic or Master Cardiology?

I came to check out these threads to make sure I wasn't being presumptuous buying a Classic II SE since most of the physicians in my practice use them, or something
  23. Anyone Starting At UPMC Shadyside School of Nursing?

Yay, congrats! I can't really answer your question because I took the PSB during one of the first weeks, and I didn't apply until I got my scores back. Sooo. . .I heard back as soon as letters...
  24. UPMC CEO Romoff's salary hits $4.45 million

Interestingly enough, we got some big sob story email about how executives would be getting a huge pay cut this
  25. UPMC CEO Romoff's salary hits $4.45 million

Nice, and I didn't get a raise this year, and tuition got raised by $5000 per year because of the "tough financial times" at UPMC. I'd be happy to make HALF of what he makes in my LIFETIME....
