  1. When do they get a return on investment?

I retire in 23 days. Once in my career I had a job that I knew from day 11 of orientation (my first day actually on the unit) was not a "fit" for me. So I went to the charge nurse and told her. I also asked if she wanted a 2-week notice, which I was ...
  2. One area of nursing that requires little hands-on care is Psychiatric nursing. Lots of talking/listening, and occasional medication administration, but mostly just using your communication skills.
  3. "Loosing" my license

This thread piqued my interest, so I went to my BON website to see how many people lose their license in Alabama, a relatively small-populated state. WOW!! I was surprised. The BON meets every 2 months for this purpose, and so far this year (to summ...
  4. Obamacare Survives, Supreme Court Rescues 'Big Health'

I wish everyone would quit comparing health insurance to automobile insurance. In the USA we are required to carry auto LIABILITY insurance. This is to pay for the OTHER car, in case we're in an accident that is our fault. Liability insurance is to p...
  5. Once again.....I'm a "nurse".....

Thanks! I too am an RN of over 40 years, and I'm thinking, like you, it's more of an ethical question. I do know that someone can't apply for an RN job without an RN license, or an LPN job without an LPN license... but the question in my mind arose w...
  6. Once again.....I'm a "nurse".....

I was wondering something... Several people have said that "nurse" is a "protected title" in their states. I'm not sure if it is in Alabama or not, but RubyVee (I think) said that her venipuncturist could get in trouble with the BON for eroniously pa...
  7. Being Naked Where I Work: A Nurse With Cancer

I too was nekkid in my facility for a vaginal hysterectomy. With the our best MD, best anesthetist, and best nurses, I made it through the process, and it didn't even feel like an "ordeal"! My prayers are with you, Ruby. I enjoy your posts, and expec...
  8. Southern Nurses Better Off Than The Rest?

I'm in Alabama. It's a Right-to-Work state. I've lived and worked as an RN here for 20 plus years, at 4 different hospitals and 2 different home health agencies. I've never even heard of a union for nurses here.
  9. Advice from someone who hires

Well yes, I'm old. And yes, I'm old-fashioned. But yes, I did hire for both a Home Health Agency and a LTC before I landed this piece of cake job to breeze into my retirement. Some of the "deal breakers" that I never discussed openly in any way, were...
  10. Sorry Nurse Recruiters/Nurse Managers!

That's exactly what I was going to say!
  11. Easy job??

i just have to vent a bit here... i read a lot of allnurses posts, and i see a recurrent theme regarding home health nursing. sometimes it's regarding nurses who couldn't "cut it" in hospital nursing, and are advised to "try home health", or sometime...
  12. Easy job??

In the "home health" business, shift work is usually not called "home health"... it is usually called "private duty". And let me clarify: I'm no longer a home health nurse. I did love the autonomy, and enjoyed listening to books on tape in my car bet...
  13. FINAL WRITTEN WARNING, first ever med error

I lived and worked in a large urban hospital in Texas in the 1990s. I was "counseled" because the mother of my 2-year-old patient complained that I wouldn't let the child have water before she went to the OR for a tonsillectomy. The mother said I was...
  14. Top three patient complaints?

Probably not. I see the same thing.
  15. If I see one more post titled....

OMG!! Best thread evah!! Thank you ALL!!!
  16. My Nursing Career In Six Words

Reading "No I don't just wipe asses" made me think of my personal 6-word message, which (sadly) is: Nursing Is Mostly Just Kissing Asses
  17. Yep!! You might want to narrow your list down to one or two that are REALLY important. I doubt you will find more than that many in one place... Unless, of course, there happens to be a workplace nobody yet knows about LOL!!
  18. The Top Three AN Red Herrings

    HAHAHAHA!!!! Yep. Good one
  19. second thoughts

Hmmm... you've been fired from numerous jobs?? Why? If it's for absences/call-ins, then nursing isn't for you. If it's because you don't get along with bosses, or with coworkers, then nursing isn't for you. Even if you make it through school, and pas...
  20. need more responses to my survey: Staffing adequacy

I did it too. And yes, the second part was quite confusing. Wish it hadn't pertained to JUST my last shift worked. My last shift didn't happen to be a "typical" shift for me, so my answers would have been quite different on most other days.
  21. I cannot work there!

    No-brainer. Move on!
  22. Overworked nurse

Thanks for this posting. Ironically hysterical!!!
  23. might be a stupid question...(job related)

Of course, this is situational, but I'm gonna give my 2 Cents: First, you've worked at your present per diem job what... 2 months? Hardly enough for a reference... Second, the work you do in rehab and the knowledge you've obtained there is much diffe...
  24. Mixed Emotions About Nsg School

Well, I have to say I don't know what it's like to be in nursing school and have young children. I finished before I had my children (who are now 27 and 30). I WILL say this, though: While I love nursing, and while it has given us many things we coul...
  25. Medical words that make you cringe.

yeppers! I usually do OK with words (except smegma and purulent)... it's odors that make me gag. Infected, draining pressure ulcers, a GI bleed, and pseudomonas... all odors I have to drag out the peppermint oil for.
