If you want to work all major holidays and night shift forever, than go to Children's Oakland! Believe me, I know first hand! I was there for 16 years and the ICN is not flexible with those issues....
Hi, I worked at Children's Oakland for 16 years. It was a great experience, in the NICU. But, BEWARE. You will work all major holidays for years, I did for 16 years! And you will be on nights for a...
Hi. I quit my job at a Children's hospital in the NICU to go to a "non" Children's hospital NICU. I know I could never go back to my old work...long list of reasons...but I can't help almost...
Are you asking me that question? This post is a year old almost. I still feel the same way, if your question is for me. A nurse shouldn't start in med-surg if that's not what they
Thanks for your reply. The baby didn't need the ECMO. But, it was just something I was thinking...that the new hospital doesn't have it. There are a lot of good things at the new place...they have...
For most healthy babies, they can breast and bottle feed. It usually takes a week or 2 to get br. feeding established even if that's all they've had. It's not easy
This makes me want to SCREAM!!! In my new unit, the order was to dropper feed a baby BID. I've never done it, never will. Refused to do it...he wouldn't bottle feed yet...so he got gavaged. I don't...
I'm sorry for your experience. A lot of the nurses in my NICU are questioning care that was given to a baby that just died...so you're not the only one beating yourself up right now. Try to remember...
At my last job in the NICU, we changed our TPN tubing Q72 hours, this seemed to help our infection rate. At my new job we change it Q24 hours. We have a problem with infections in the new unit. Of...
Thank you, that's what I was wondering. I think most places hang the TPN and lipids separately...does anyone here hang TPN that has lipids mixed in with it??
If you read the CDC website, thay recommend changing TPN no more frequently than Q72, lipids are Q24. So, the hospitals that change TPN Q24 are wrong because you are breaking into the PICC lines too...
Yes, I read that it says any lipids chould be changed Q24. Our lipids are hung separately from the TPN. It sounds like some hospitals mix the TPN and lipids together? Our TPN does not contain lipids....
Thanks for the link. It says to not change the IV tubing more frequently than every 72 hours, so that definately answers my question! I'm going to bring this to work.
Yes, I know. We change our bags and tubing BOTH Q24. Where I used to work we changed the TPN bag Q24, but the tubing was changed Q72. Please re-read my original post if you don't understand my...
I took care of a 610 gm. preemie the other day who is being given IM injections of Vit. A 3x a week. I've never seen this before, it's a new tx for chronic lung disease...apparently it can't be given...
I found some studies online showing that Vit. A helps in preventing CLD, but it has to be given IM...but in such a tiny baby there isn't any "M", so I guess it's really kinda SQ!!
