Breastfeed or else
You get cupons don't you ? I'm sorry I get extremely upset when it comes to this subject. I bf'd my 1st ( and only child) for 13 months, and wasn't happy when she weaned. The fact is ( in my opinion) with all the knowledge and research done on this subject- you should feel guilty if you simply chose not to breastfeed ( assuming that it was medically safe for you to do so). Breastmilk is best, formula is lacking in more areas than one. Statistically ( in our hospital) the norm is to forumla feed by an overwhelming majority. I have bf'd when most people wouln't, and the satisfaction I have from knowing I have given the absolute best for my daughter allows me the pleasure of not feeling guilty. A support group ???? HA !! What a joke. The focus here has been "people always looked at me giving my child a bottle..." Well, how in the h*** do you think people look at you when your 2 month old gets hungry at Wal-Mart and you have to nurse her ? Do you think they accept that ? Heck NO ! But what does it matter what other people think ? If you are that concerned about the opinions of others, you should NOT be bearing children of any sort, until you establish self-identity and a lil bit of self-esteem. I do think that there should be a label attached to formula. Something like, "If you'd like to relactation assistance please call us at 1800#######. We here at (insert manufacture's name) believe that breastmilk is best, and truley are committed to your child's health and well-being" If you get offended by this...too bad, nobody needs to tip-toe around anyone, facts are facts, they are not ruled by emotion.

Are breastpumps available for use for nurses?
If the tubing and horns are a seperate entity and milk does NOT pass through any machinery ( assuming you are HIV free, and not one drop of blood has came from your nipple because of them being cracked), it is safe for multiple users (per FDA-supposidly, although they do not regulate the resale of pumps)-the only 2 that come to mind, however, are the Ameda and Whisper Wear pump. Irreguardless to the fact, I prefer to use my own pump, but the hospital grade ones here, are for employees and patients, we have to duck and bob into an empty room, though

nursing students for choice
Ok, well assuming that because she's going to be a nurse and "shouldn't " as you've said participate in pro-choice activities, then why don't we just start making choices for our patients, I mean let's forget how they feel. Why give chemo to patients who have lung cancer b/c they smoked, I mean, smoking cigarettes isn't a necessary function to live.:chuckle Personally, I think having abortions shouldn't be a form of birth control, however, I don't want the gov't or any other nut job making my decisions either. To the OP, while I find your enthusiasim refreshing, perhaps, nursing school maybe isn't the time or the place, you know what I mean. Other than that, I'm all for it girl, just not right now.

What is your opinion of this situation?
I can't say anymore than anyone else has, except this, if and when you feel appropriate, perahps you could drop her a nice card and just thank her for doing everything that she has done for you personally/professionally. At least, she'll feel better, and you will too. As far as the $hitheads that started it, ya know......feel bad for the kids, ignorance breeds ignorance. No, it's not right, you know that, I know that, but, sometimes, you gotta just walk away knowing you are right. Good luck on your boards BTW !

Why did you take up nursing? What's your story?
Geez, this is a long story. For as long as I can remember, I've always wanted to take care of people. My mom was married to a very aggressive ( and abusive) husband, who would constantly run her down, insult her, and sad to say, but send her to the Emergency Room. My uncle ( paternal side) and his wife worked in the emergency room at which my mother frequented ( she had so many frequent flyer miles, she could've gone around the world and back). They would try to help her, help her realize that where she was in her life wasn't healthy, and it wasn't good for my siblings and I, but as you know, the circle of violence is hard to break. This guy was a complete a@@. My mom had us fairly young, and probably didn't have the financial means to support us, so she stayed with this guy for 12 years. She busted her butt to get through nursing school. I was left a lot of times to take care of my younger sisters, but I knew that as soon as she was done with school, my nightmare would end. Well...she finished school....but she didn't leave him ( at least not when she said she would). His violence soon started to spread to the 3 of us. So, I left. I moved in with my bio-dad, whom I didn't have much of a realtionship with ( long story, mom thought she was doing the best thing, turns out, she probably wasn't). I was told that I had to get a job to pay rent. I went to school during the days, and worked the afternoon shift at a LTC as a CNA. That got old, I got so burned out. I pushed my pyschological problems into engery that allowed me to truley care about somebody else. Nobody saw what I was really going through, and I didn't think anybody cared. I paid rent to live with my bio-dad, my mom wasn't speaking to me, all I really had I thought was my patients at work, and my ailing grandparents. I had told my grandmother that someday, I would go to nursing school, and after that, I would make it a point to help somebody like my mom, in hopes of preventing children who had gone through what I had. Unfortunately, after high school, there was no money for college. As much as I loved ( and still do) being a CNA, you can't live on that money. So...bound and determined, I went to the Army Recruiter. I enlisted 3 weeks after walking into his office. I was supposed to be Medic, but there's a clause called "Needs of the Army" and I went commo instead. ( That pissed me off, but in a way, the Army rescued me from a lot of things). Fast forward a couple of deployments, I met my husband, whom, really was my best friend above all other things, we get married, then we find out our unit was headed back to Iraq, we *thought* no sweat, we've done this before, we'll go...together, and make the best of it. No such luck, I go to get an Anthrax shot, and bam! my pregnancy test lights up like a christmas tree, I was pregnant. SO.....a few months later, I decide not to get out because I had had a baby, but because, I feel like now's the time to finally pursue something I've waited years to do. You know, the truth of it is, it is a calling, it's a calling to do the absolute MOST you can do to make somebody more comfortable, to watch out for them when they can't, to help them understand things that otherwise, they might not be able to. My hopes, wherever I find myself ( I am thinking CNM/WHCNP) in whichever specialty, is that, I can be a nurse who truely listens, and understands, and takes a genuine interest in not only the physical well-being, but emotional as well.

If you could change on aspect of nursing.
I can only say this as a student, the daughter of a Nurse and D.O., but I think image. People (even when I worked as a CNA) often see scrubs and a woman and think "cutsey little nursey-girl". I'd like to see Nurses treated professionally, and not like some teeny-bopper who "only has an associate's degree".

want to help out a friend BUT.....
You did exactly the right thing. Don't sweat it. If anything you are helping your friend ( who, btw, IMO is just using you for what she can get) to either manage her money well or b) learn that life only offers so many "free-rides". I doubt that she has as many financial problems as she's indicated to you for one, and for another, no matter how good of a friend as she is, is she worth your liscence, your salary, and what you provide to your family as a result of the aformentioned ? NO, probobly not. If she's truly your friend, I doubt she would've put you ( or anyone else for that matter) in that situation. You did the right thing. Too bad somebody didn't do it earlier, though. ((((((hugs))))))

LTC nurse needs some opinions
Yuppers she needs to be more than reprimanded. But, I don't see that happening, of course I'm sure you don't either. I'd work for as long as you can ( assuming the financial need is there, and if not-leave) while you find another job, write a letter to the Company ( which, BTW sounds like one I used to work for) explaining why you left ( this could also save you behind if something should ever come of her signing your name like state inspec.etc etc). You deserve better treatment than that. I've found that a lot of LTC's just like to brush everything "under the carpet", so to speak. Good luck, and I'm sorry that hefer did that to you

celebrity deliveries
You're right Blue eyes about high jacking the thread, and to be honest, that was not at all my intentions, honesty. But, like I've said to every other poster, I don't need you to add your 2 cents to the situation, my original point with the post still stands. Thanks and have a great and glorious day.

celebrity deliveries
Please save it. I have 5 years of listening that same garbage you are trying to feed me. My point was, the Texas RN FNP ( or whatever it is) showed her true colors by her statement, and only people with that rational of thinking believe they are superior b/c of their rank. Point blank. End of that conversation. BTW, I do not consider my L&D my CO's business ( not that he would give two hoots I'm sure), but also IG doesn't handle complaints of mistreatment in DACH. I did speak to someone, a butter bar, who pretty much lit her cigarette and told me to be happy the baby was "OK for now".

medicine or wives tale????
The BabyComp is an ovulation predictor of sorts-with a whole lot of extra du-hickeys added. The time at which you concieve plays a big part in the sex of the baby ( lady partsl secretions..etc etc). Like I said, it worked for us. It's really quite a long story. I wanted a baby, but when I found out DH was deploying quick changed my mind. ( I started back on BC pills which I hate), but continued to use the BabyComp to please my DH who desperately wanted a baby ( I wanted to deploy with him not get pregnant), he wanted another girl, so, when the little girl baby light came on...well.. you know what happened after that,LOL. It's pricey, but, I think its' worth it. I really do. http://www.ladycomp.com/ladycomp_en.htm There are a few other monitors on this site, each a step down of the one before it. edited to add website http://naturalbirthcontrol.com/show.php?page=family_planning

Need advice...life threatened by pt's family today
My thoughts exactly. You just never know what or how people are going to react. I think he is way out of line for his threats, and I'd be hurt too. We have a gun in our house, and, truth be told, when DH leaves for the field or on a deployment, I feel much more secure. At minimum, though, if guns are an issue, please look into other forms of self protection (ie, pepper spray, self defense classes, tazers, something..) Protect yourself and your family.
