  1. I'm Injection Mistake

Has anyone ever forgotten to aspirate when giving an I'm injection in the deltoid?? I worked 10-10 today after a full week of working, and gave this at 10:45 when I should have been home already, and in my car on the way home I realized I didn't aspi...
  2. MRSA Question

I had a nurse tell me that all healthcare workers are probably colonized with MRSA in their noses, just not enough to make us sick. Is this true? If I get immunocompromised one day, can I get deathly ill with respiratory MRSA? I'm a little frightened...
  3. Precepting new BSN grad/having trouble

Wow, I can't believe the immaturity in this person. She sounds like she'll be a terrible nurse with such a know it all attitude. Being cocky gets you nowhere in nursing, in fact, it may land your patient in trouble when you can't admit you don't know...

tazzi, what kind of job is it? i used to work er and boy have i had enough. is this a travel position or full time? [color=#2f4f4f] [color=#2f4f4f]p.s. you always respond to my posts with sound advice, thanks! [color=#2f4f4f]p.s.s. good luck! ...
  5. Losing patients - does it get easier?

this is true. however, the day you stop feeling empathy for people leave nursing. never let cynicism cloud your human qualities. it sounds like you'll be a very caring nurse.
  6. OR to Cancer Center

i went from er to outpatient cancer center, and although it was difficult at first (complete change of pace/personalities), i haven't looked back. a cancer center is a wonderful place to work. i love it!
  7. i'm lost and feel trapped

it's frustrating when non-oncology pts get placed on a floor as specialized as oncology. i see it happen at my hospital. maybe after gaining some experience, consider outpatient. i've done work in rad/onc depts. and infusion centers in a cancer ce...
  8. Triage sucks!!! Any tips??

in the er where i used to work they split the 12 hour triage shift in half. one nurse would do 7-1 in the morning, then s/he would go in the back and relieve someone on the floor. the nurse on the floor would then take the 1-7 triage shift. they'd...
  9. Accused of being racist - how to handle?

Why does it always come down to racism? People automatically assume that's what the deal is. If you give someone a look, it can be b/c they're an idiot, and not because of race. There are annoying people in all races, creeds, religions, etc...but ...
  10. Silvadene-HELP

:uhoh21: I never knew that Silvadene was a sulfa drug!!! I can't believe it...I got burned this a.m. and the nurse said "if you open this stuff in the same room w/ a pt who is allergic to sulfa they'll..." and then she acted like she was dying. I us...
  11. Silvadene-HELP

That's a good pearl of advice;)
  12. Silvadene-HELP

my dad temporarily took himself off one of his medication so he could eat grapefruit! i asked, "does your doctor know?" he said, "no." i just shook my head and walked away. he said, "i just love grapefruit." i felt bad b/c he couldn't have it, b...
  13. Nursing Student in Trouble...

I would have taken one look at his haircut and walked out of the bar, restaurant, or wherever. Yikes!
  14. Silvadene-HELP

I didn't look it up until...tonight! I only saw "silvaden" in our Pixus. I feel like a class A idiot. I just pray any pts I put it on are okay, would I have heard if they were really harmed? I never treated anyone w/ it who was admitted, only mor...
  15. big bad nursing myths busted

I know some nurses who have that attitude, it's sad that they do. I worked in Hospice (briefly), and if I'm terminal, sign me up! I want to be comfortable when I go out. Kudos to Hospice nurses, they're very strong people. P.S. I was actually to...
  16. Infusaports

Time after time I watch nurses in Dr.'s offices access infusaports without using sterile technique. They put on iodine and then wipe it off immediately with non-sterile gauze. They don't use sterile gloves and the poke at the port with their finger...
  17. Infusaports

I don't work in these offices, but I visit regularly for work. I don't know why the oncologists let this happen, you'd think they would say something. I've heard nurses in our infusion center tell their pts to only let a nurse access their port b/c...
  18. Lung Cancer Stigma

Jayla, I completely agree...I'm sorry to hear of the devestation this must be causing your family. At my hospital, we're trying to start a Lung Cancer Navigator program to help lung cancer patients find resources, there aren't many for lung cancer. ...
  19. Aml

I saw the pt today, ran into him. He's fine, up & about. He DID go to the gunshow, but swears he stayed away from crowds. It's just hard to see a young man w/ a family so ill. Sometimes you end up feeling responsible for them b/c you're the careg...
  20. Aml

Does anyone know the usual prognosis for AML? I have a very nice pt w/ this, he's only 45. I wig out a bit, accessing his port when his WBC count is only 0.9! I'm sooo scared that anything less than perfection in my sterile technique will result in...
  21. WBC Elevation

Why else, besides infection, would WBC be elevated after surgery, if it's not yet been 24 hours? If the pt has no temp or s/s of infection, do they elevate from the procedure and the trauma of the incision, etc.?
  22. WBC Elevation

I asked the surgeon & he said the location of the surgery & inflammation caused the slightly elevated counts; also he gave steroids prior to surgery. That website seems very handy, I've bookmarked it, thanks!
  23. Young & Ignorant

When I was a young nurse, the floor RNs told me I could hang platelets on regular IV tubing. I did so after going to a new dept. later on & the guy ended up w/ chills & a fever. He was going for hip surgery after a fx. I gave him Tylenol &...
  24. Young & Ignorant

Is there any help for self-doubt? I took a BP today, and keep mulling over it, "did I hear it correctly, was it right?" It was low, and I gave the man his "numbers" to show his Dr., but if his BP med gets lowered b/c of it and he dies, is it my fault...
  25. Young & Ignorant

I think its stress-school; work FT, just bought a house. I gave IV Remicade on Tue and can't remember if I used a filter or not...probably did, I remember priming one. But I spoke to the pt today & she's okay. I think something would have happene...
