  1. Unable to wear N95 or papr

Let me know how it plays out.
  2. Unable to wear N95 or papr

SMH: really, really, come in to work for bonus money LOL! Seriously, politely tell her you had no idea you we're claustrophobic wearing a hood, and that you should be given the benefit of the doubt as you weren't refusing to work, jus...
  3. Unable to wear N95 or papr

Sorry to hear that, hope you can come to a successful resolution of this issue. Your Supervisor as a nurse should recognize that some people can be claustrophobic wearing a hood. There's no way you're at fault for any of this.
  4. Unable to wear N95 or papr

This is true, however, harassments of staff is brought to the attention of the CNO in union hospitals: that requires an investigation and a reply( at least in 1199 facilities, YMMV) Supplies, well that's on the hospital, the union ...
  5. Unable to wear N95 or papr

"Then she called me down to her office". That alone shows you her mindset, safely ensconced in her office, rather than coming up and seeing the problem insitu. I pray you're working in a union hospital, and have filed a complaint with ...
  6. Is calling off for burnout a thing?

Burnout is definitely a thing. Callout if you feel the need: management doesn't care if you're burned-out and screw up, only that you screwed up. Honestly you're manager sounds like a *** who couldn't nurse her way out of a paper bag....
  7. What is your schedule like as a nurse?

I work ED 3 or 4 12hr evening (11-2300) shifts a week depending on how my schedule falls. I can sign up for OT; occasionally I'm asked if I like to stay a few hours over while on shift, at my discretion. I'm in the north east U.S., and...
  8. Is it true all nurses get MRSA or C-DIFF?

Oh I do if it's "Nurses Night" at the local bar when "nurses drink free all night"!! " Show me where it's says only female nurses night.". I'll have another thanks.
  9. Delegation Woes

Well as long as your responsibilities are in order that's fine. I've never sent anyone to do a task I haven't done myself. The important thing to remember is that; you are responsible for your work, and to see that they have done th...
  10. Can you have piercings in the nursing program?

    This!
  11. Only ''Fill in the blank" Nurses Need Apply?

That's the typical " lets do more with less" AKA: While your at it stick this broom up your butt so you can sweep as you go along." I've been pulled to as many as 3 different areas in the course of a shift to "put out fires" i...
  12. When did it become OK to treat your nurse like poo?

The demands are increasing and getting more and more unreasonable: chairs at the stretcher side in a jammed ER. Pt just arrives via EMS at 1700hrs 1st words out of there mouth " I haven't eaten all day..get me something", really, rea...
  13. Letting CNA pass your meds, bad idea?

:wakeneo: : Thank goodness it's only a hypothetical question. You are in charge of the pt care period. Never, ever, pass on that which you have a responsibility for to others, not just because it's against the law, but because it endangers the pt, an...
  14. Secondary Mace exposure

Sodium bicarb will usually take care of the exposed skin effects for staff,NS flush for eye exposure. Generally it's best to put the alleged criminal in the decontam shower and hose him down. This works for CN, CS and pepper spray.
  15. Terms we will not admit to using

GBI= Gomer Boomerang Index: the interval of days that pass before a frequent flier is seen again, if it's lengthening it's a positive index. PRN= Patient recieved nothing.
  16. Boosting Morale in the ER

I can also add some leadership wisdom for years as a military officer: Be involved, go around and see how people are holding up , and lend a hand, doing a set of vital signs, or discharging a pt for a busy staffer helps keep them going. Never give...
  17. ER to ICU?

I'll second linda's advice, been on med/surg,recovery,icu,ccu,copters and ED. Enjoyed them all but ED is where I hang my hat. Paul
  18. ER experience

I think you might find that being a new grad in a ED postion, to be somewhat overwhelming. I would suggest time on the floor getting your basics solidly grounded, and in general used to how pt, and staff work, getting your physical, and diagnostic sk...
  19. Is Nursing School Hard?

I went to nursing school after a busy combat tour in Vietnam as a ranger. Nursing school was harder.
  20. I failed the interview personality test/survey!

Amen to that. This big business, politically correct crap has got to stop. Oh, and a flash for the hospital admin folks; their called patients, not customers. Nurses do pt care not customer service, and yes sometimes we are less that charming with s...
  21. You Know You're a Nurse When...

You know your a nurse when you tell the trooper that just pulled you over " I work in the ER their going to take your sorry ass to the next time you have a problem."...and drive away scott free.
  22. Any bedside nurses making over 100K ?

Hmmm... I should make about 90k straight pay if I want to see how good my stent is functioning I could do enough OT to top out at 100k or over. NY is an expensive place to live..I won't be seeing that Rolls anytime soon. Paul
  23. What you make as a nurse Vs. Cost of living

NY CITY area SEIU 1199 union hospitals: new grad RN starting is like $56,000-61,000 Housing goes upward from $390K for a house and $1000 minimum/month for an apt. I have a house in Nassau County Long island that's like $475k: by virtue of inhe...
  24. Mandatory Holidays????

The only mandatory holidays we have are thanksgiving, xmas, and new years, and you put in requests for those off, if they don't fall as a natural in your work time. I usually swap xmas for new years with someone: I don't have kids, and I rather par...
  25. I didn't get all this education to wipe behinds!

If you work in the trenches, your gonna end up shoveling dirt. I have no emotional/ego problem doing the whipe and dipe stuff. I do have logistics problem with it sometimes. My ED is a patient mill: the influx is astounding most days, so faced with ...
