Worked nights for several years. There was a study in the 90's about giving night shift workers a power nap (20-30 mins) in addition to their break time. The results included a decrease in med errors. This would be a great EBP project!

I too have PCOS. I agree with the prev. posts, but wanted to add emphasis to connecting patients with providers. So many women are not being diagnosed with pcos at all. And there are alot that are being managed by a gp. Unless the gp has an endo...
What is the most important info you would want a float nurse to know working in your area? This would be a RN with at least 5 years experience in other critical care areas. Thanks for your input!:redpinkhe
Hey, concerning the orig. question.... Hang the piggyback higher. The pump is working but it only knows to pump at a certain rate the bag that will infuse is the one with a fluid level higher than the other. As the PB bag empties, you will see it s...
Hi All, Just looking for some other ideas. My sister in law had gastric bypass surgery 5 years ago. Since July she has gained 30 pounds, and admits to having more stress and stressful eating during that time. Also during this time she started havi...
Most Hospitals (around here anyway) are offering refresher courses to try to market themselves to the returning workforce. Ask potential employers what they offer. Sometimes orientation is long enough to cover as a refresher. Good Luck, and welcome...
What good advice! I agree with the protein snacks while charting. But the main focus is giving yourself time to develop an organizational plan to your day. I have been a nurse for almost 8 years. I have progressed as far as I have by watching oth...

I spent a year in J. Sarg's program in the early 90's as well. I had problems with my advisor keeping appointments. I finished my RN at John Tyler. I agree with Nekhismom, make sure Bon Secours will transfer into your BSN program.
Just a question to anyone who thinks this was the patient's choice.... I'm white, can I specify only to take care of white people with white families??? Is that my choice as well???
Just a couple of quick thoughts from one nite shifter to another..... I like the idea of shift rotation, but if you don't get 100% agreement, how can it fly? I know several day people who could come up with valid reasons not to be able to do it. An...
Hey Mario, Don't turn your back on forgiveness, sometimes it can be the best release of emotions we don't realize we are carrying. Your replies have been very eye-opening for me. I'm not going to tell you what you need to do, you are taking care of...
Hi Marianne, I work in an ICU that receives GB patients. I also worked on a stepdown that received GB patients. Like all proceedures, education is the greatest strength. There is a website (I think its http://www.bariatricsurgery.com - your docto...
I voted Yes, and I do actively talk to people about being a nurse! Several posts brought up the money issue and the work load issue. There are many jobs out there that make you work hard, and pay marginally. I'm not going to tell you that money is...

I work in one of those VA facilities! So far the traveling bot hasn't reared its head, however it is filling the pts med drawers for each unit, then a pharm tech delivers the cartridges with those drawers to each unit every am. So far I haven't see...
I agree with the witch hunt theory. Just watch the news/drama shows! There are families that are in litigation with hospitals over the wrong treatment or no treatment and blaming it on the shortage of nurses. Now whether their particular situation...
In my facility restraint orders are renewed q24h unless the restraints are needed for behavioral issues, then the pt needs to be seen by a doc within 2 to 4 hrs (can't remember specifics). We were cited for restraint documentation last review so now...
When I work in SICU it's usually 1:2, however if the pt has high acuity (ex- CVVH, transplant, Crani w/ increased ICP) then it's 1:1. I've never seen 2:1 but have heard stories of crash and burns with multiple nurses. I have had to triple several ...
one more quickie to add...... Hemodialysis patient last spun on a Friday, hit the ER on Sunday late evening with EMS pacing him. K+ was 9.9 , HR was in 30's before pacer applied. After 15 mins of emergent dialysis the pacer was able to be pulled of...
I've worked in a renal unit also, yes craziness is abundant! We had a new admit walk in one evening with a creatine of 16 ! He denied any and all complaints. His wife told us he had been "a little off" that week....... a LITTLE ?!?!?!
