  1. Advise needed from UM or DON/DNS

This is a great question and I'm personally glad you asked it. There isn't an easy answer, unfortunately. First, I would consider your DNS and Administrator's characters. Have you been privy to similar conversations? Do you know how they re...
  2. Blister on bunion

I believe you do have to call it a DTI because you are unable to assess the damage to the underlying skin.
  3. Getting out just in time!

What?!?!?!?! I just want to know what in the name of God happened that made some super intelligent administrators decide this is a good idea??
  4. Do You Remember...

I have had to become very selective with who I lend clothes out to. My supply dwindled down to almost nothing and I can’t believe the stuff the teachers and kids will come to me looking for a change of clothes for .... a tiny water spill on your legs...
  5. How many students do you see per day?

I have 688 students (pre-K - 6) and we average 60 visits a day (this includes daily meds. I have no diabetics). 5,059 visits this year to date. This is an improvement from 60-80 visits a day when I first started in 2017.
  6. Managing allergy symptoms

    That's hilarious! I think it will give a few lol's ?
  7. Managing allergy symptoms

Spring allergies are not even in full effect in my part of the Northeast yet we are starting to see the kids (some come in right off the bus in the morning) with allergy symptoms. Mostly itchy, red eyes. Last May, I saw an average of 45 visits a da...
  8. Psych or LTC less Stressful?

LTC has a large psych component but without the specialized training, resources and most importantly, staffing. I've done both and found LTC to be 10x more stressful.
  9. hot glue guns

Feeling grateful that I've never encountered a hot glue gun injury ?
  10. Poor planning

I don't understand how this is a nurse dismissal? If the student has opted to call their parents, rather than present to the health office for an assessment, this is not a nurse dismissal (in my school)... this would make me crazy!
  11. I just can't

You've got this! 40 more days. I love the advice of the poster above - write it all down while it's fresh. Then, once it's dumped out on paper, breathe deep and let it go for today. We've all been there.
  12. Managing allergy symptoms

I thought I'd just recap some of my favorite visits from today: * Had a 4th grader come in 3 times with mild redness (more like, light pink) bilateral sclera. No swelling, no tears. C/o itching. Asks to do a tap water rinse and hold an ice pack f...
  13. Family Behavior during a code

    I wonder this also.
  14. Managing allergy symptoms

    Fantastic idea! Thank you!
  15. "Heating Pads"

I'm in elementary school, so I rarely have girls who request them for cramps. But, I do find they come in handy for some ailments (ear pain, neck pain). They are not allowed to leave my office with them (I have both electric and instant).
  16. Parent wants to stay all day

I've been through a similar situation. My experience was that once the parents were confident with my ability to care for their child, they went from that same type of need for total and absolute control during the school day, after school-sports/da...
  17. Nurse dies after assault at job. She finished her shift first.

Heartbroken for this nurse and her family.
  18. Complaint of the Day

    This mother...is my hero ?
  19. Parents keep medicating their febrile kids in the morning

Daily occurrence here...It usually starts around 11:30; tylenol/advil wears off and the kid feels like poo. I once had a student cry and tell me 'not to call his mom' because she threatened him with discipline if he came to the nurse. I confronted...
  20. student extracurricular activities

What is your district policy on providing a nurse for field trips? Ours is, every effort will be made for a nurse to attend (where needed, i.e.: diabetic management) or, parents. Parents do not have to agree to attend and we can not make them. If ...
  21. Lab Coat or No

As a nursing director, I was expected to wear a lab coat over my clothes. I am a fan of this look. I have my name and title embroidered on the left pocket. I think it's polished and professional and gives you a layer of protection, especially whe...
  22. Did I make the right choice?

Toaster, you did the right thing. The nature of agency nursing is to be ready to cover when and where needed, without much notice. You will not receive any orientation. You will be called to different facilities constantly. It is for well-experie...
