Interested in pursuing a career in the NICU

Hello, I am a third semester nursing student and have been trying to figure out which specialty would be right for me. I spent two days in the NICU and I loved it so much that I want to pursue it. I plan to get my BSN after my associates. I wanted to know if there are any certificates you would recommend I obtain to boost my chances of getting my foot into the NICU? Any associations or groups you recommend I join? Also, what are some of the pros/cons of being a NICU nurse? Any advice would be much appreciated.
  2. I am about to start nursing school this January, and I am pretty positive I want to become a labor and delivery nurse. I know that this is a very hard nursing specialty to get into, but I was hoping some of you would have tips on how to get in. Are there any organizations or associations you recommend I join? Or are there extra certifications I can get to boost my chances of being hired as a labor and delivery nurse? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

No, but the packet says if you are not currently insured and you are a CNA that wishes to be insured as an ADN student to contact NSO so you receive the correct application. Their number is 1-800-247-1500. All info about CNAs receiving coverage through NSO is on page 14 of the ADN student info packet.

Does anyone from the fast track program know what clinical location DHP is? I know they mentioned it at the meeting but I forgot what the name of the hospital is and where it is located.

I was alternate number 5, and I made it in. I got my schedule this morning. :)

You should have received a student information packet; but yes you do need to get a two step TB, hep B, varicella, TDap, and MMR. I would start right away because the two step TB takes about two weeks to complete and if you don't show immunity for something you are going to have to get more shots and then repeat the titers to prove you now have immunity. It says in the packet that we need to have our BLS by the 14th, but seeing as you just got accepted you obviously haven't had a lot of time to meet these requirements by the due dates. I would call the health sciences office with any questions you have, I would think they would give you an extension. The NSO insurance is $35 per year.

Hey guys! I'm new to this thread, I got in at SJDC with 74 points. I am going to be doing clinicals at Lodi memorial and I am an alternate for the fast track program. I tried to call to find out what number alternate I am, and the lady said she wasn't sure but they only invited 5 alternates to attend the information session. So fingers crossed I make it in.
