Is 1 nurse to 500 patients acceptable?

And I always make a point to refer to them as "patients." I am their nurse.

I had the most typical new-student dream last night...

Thanks aTOMic for making me giggle this AM. I can relate!! I can tell when the stress is building up for me when I have that same dream. In my dream it is always the end of the semester and we are having finals, when I suddenly realize I have not a...
  3. Have you talked with the CC staff about all the requirements? I know they were going to a point system that included not only the GPA but extra points for health care related jobs or training (other than CNA, which was going to be required). Maybe ...

Oldest in cohort...feeling out of place

I was the oldest in my cohort at 55 when I started. I enjoyed myself and made lots of friends. Many of us still stay in touch and one is a very dear friend now!

    It's never too late!

Yes, brandy1017, it is important to be careful about back, especially since I broke my back 10 years ago and have an anterior/posterior fusion. I am very careful and I don't work in acute care. And even though my other job was pretty high paying, it...

    It's never too late!

I started nursing school at age 55! I too had always wanted to do it and had worked on general education over the years with the thought in mind that I would love to go to nursing school. One day when I was 52 I was sitting in my office at my long t...

    What is your Achilles heel?

I could never be a dental assistance. The thought of a broken tooth or tooth extraction gives me the willies. Have gotten better though because doing H&P in jailhouse which includes checking on dental health. Can't believe the things I have see...

What did/do you dissect in A&P lab?

Fetal pigs. They had the major arteries filled with red dye and the major veins filled with blue dye. Also sheep hearts and sheep brains. Our school (community college) also had three human cadavers, but we didn't dissect them. We just looked at ...

    Superstitions???

I didn't do too much in nursing school but when I used to ride and show horses I had certain underwear and shirts I would and wouldn't wear. My daughter also has little quirky superstition based behavior which a coworker noticed and told her, "Oh yo...

D.O.N. tells me NOT to describe wound???

I work in corrections nursing. We had a patient with horrible wounds on her hands. Even WE medicated her for pain with codeine before dressing changes! This in an environment where almost no none gets any pain medication stronger than Ibuprofen. Isn...

    ADN's being pushed out

There are so many RN-BSN programs on line that not having a school in the area shouldn't be an impediment except for the new grads. The hospital could make a deal with an on-line program for a tuition reduction. The agency I work for has a deal wit...

    Funniest or worst PDN notes.

Very good tip SDALPN! Definitely will apply this to my notes.

    Home health pediatric...demanding parent tips??

Great advice and information, SDALPN!! I am fairly new to PDN and my first case was, well, as SDALPN described, "easy to get on...." I did my best but the woman ended up saying she didn't want me. What I had done right was to let my agency know ...

    Funniest or worst PDN notes.

The EMR my agency has does not have any selectable item for a change of a brief either. We just document I & O, with source (diaper), which as you say, is a given that you changed it. When I had to write the Progress Notes out by hand I used to...
  16. I would like to present that your reaction to these people of thinking about them during your days off and also even considering leaving nursing because of them is a sign that your mental health may be suffering too. I say this because I have a mood...

    Funniest or worst PDN notes.

Our agency switched to EMR last month. It is GREAT! Really helps out with the charting. In my opinion it helps with accuracy, is much more concise, less time consuming. Really appreciate it. Easy to use also. Everyone loves it.

    Prison versus jail? Differences?

I work in jail and have never worked in a prison. Other posters have mentioned transcience. The things that pertain to that are that when the person comes to the jail and you become responsible for their well-being you must assess them and develop ...

    odd case

I had a case in which the child was on the floor most of the time, although did have a regular bed too. I was told in an unpleasant manner that "Nurses do not belong in this room (lfamily) and should never sit on the couch." The child and nursing r...

What brand of scrubs do you prefer?

I have become really fond of the Healing Hands tops because they have some really cute styles and prints that don't just scream "scrubs." I work PDN in a home and I like to be comfortable in scrubs but I think it is nice to look more like regular cl...
  22. This is great advice. I would often use the time to put in a load of laundry, load the dishwasher or even go outside and throw a ball for the dog. I have borderline narcolepsy too (self-diagnosed) and this would really help. Oops, reply didn't sho...

Judged because you are a Correctional Nurse

I agree there is definitely a stigma but Snook girl has great advice re the community volunteer service. That is valuable no matter what your nursing experience is. Also good advice to be prepared to talk about the strength to your assessment skill...

The Use of Nursing Diagnosis After School

I really think they are valuable and we should cultivate them in our thinking about the patient care needs and not lose that habit. I do use them in the documentation my agency uses - it is SOAPE format. The ND is the Assessment piece.
