Just wanted to follow up and see how the student is doing? Have they still had the high blood pressure? and have you still had trouble with the parents responding to the school or getting the student to the doctor?

In SC we only allow Medical and Religious exemptions. Medical is on our state immunization form (there's a box the doctor fills out). Religious can only be obtained from the health department. We enforce vaccines but also want the kid in school. I'm a middle school nurse so our big vaccine is the TDap for 7th graders. If it means a kid being excluded from school then we will mention the religious exemption but that is rare. Most of the parents know or find out about that option from social media anyway.

We don't carry OTC meds and are not allowed heating pads. We also allow students to call parents when they ask. BUT in this case I would be the one calling, informing parent of complaint/findings, and tell them that it is NOT a nurse dismissal. Usually that is enough for them to then speak to the student and send them back to class. If they do pick up it's a parent note and their responsibility.

Our district has one nurse at every school (lpn or RN). Some school may have a .5 nurse or a second nurse based on procedures.

We have "The Period Project" in our state (SC). They provided free products and specifically package pads and fill garbage bags with these pad bags for schools. We get our bags from the district base site but they request it from the non-profit.

Our governor just announced last night that our whole state will be receiving these test for in school. Said they will be in schools by the week after Thanksgiving. Haven't heard anything from the district/my director about it yet. Our district is already so short on nurses, I don't know where some schools will find the time to test (even if it is only 15 minutes). Some schools don't even have a nurse ? Oh, and there was mention of drive-thru testing by the school nurse in the morning at drop off ?

Rules are no medications unless signed by a parent and provided by a parent. That being said vaseline may be used on some cuts if necessary, but nothing with actual medicine in it. Cough drops are a no go also unless paperwork and provided. We just got a wheelchair to use around the school for students who may be on crutches since our school has 2 buildings. Otherwise no equipment is given out.

Spoke with my district nursing coordinator and she said legally homebound is to remain under SPED. Only thing I may do is verify the doctor's note and make sure it's updated every 30 days as needed. She agreed that I am not qualified (which is totally fine by me!). I emailed the SPED, Director, and Assistant Director turning down the position. And as to why they wanted to get it out from SPED... No clue. My school can be very backwards sometimes due to it being a "charter" school.

WIN for me! Field days were both postponed because of rain. It was supposed to be yesterday and today. They got moved to next Tuesday and Wednesday. My last day just happens to be Friday so I will not be here. Will make sure the freezer is full of ice for them but they can handle it themselves!

Our school has a policy where you do not send them home if found during the school day. That being said after they do go home they are not to return until some form of proof of treatment is provided (receipt of kit purchase, note from lice treatment center, prescription or doctors note). Now the proof may not mean they actually used any treatment but I would hope if they spend the money then they would use it. But like someone said, it is a nuisance more than a communicable disease. Just keep educating. Also see if any pharmacies or doctor offices want to donate lice kits.

So I just had the Special Ed coordinator come into my office and ask me to be the homebound coordinator for next year. They are trying to get it out from under special education for some reason. I have no experience on this and was told we only have one or two students a year that need it. Again I have not been brought in on it this year. I just watched a 15 minute training video which really just made me more confused and nervous. I feel like it may be out of my scope of being a school nurse. Has anyone else been the head coordinator? Or has anyone just been a part of the homebound team with special education being the overall coordinator? Or should I just stay out of it all together?

I have powerpoint for inhaler and epi. First aid is covered with those that get the CPR training. We had 18 teachers get certified or re-certified this year!

1) passes with name, date, and time so they aren't wandering. Also, so I know their full name for emergency reasons (fire drill, look up last name to get number to call home). If the kid can tell a teacher why they need to go to the nurse, then they can use their voice and tell me. I have caught a good amount of kids lying and changing their story this way (wanting to go home or avoid work). 2) I fill out the time in/out, name, complaint, action by me/assessment, whether a call made home, and whether they return to class or home on a daily log sheet. 3) No number system. Prioritize based on the children's needs. Example: Injury before "feel sick"/runny nose. 4)Teachers all have a bag of Band-Aids so they should not be sent down unless it is a large cut/abrasion. Ice, I give out because I have a limited amount and need to assess the injury anyway.

According to staff here who observe it as well as research I have done water is not allowed. Had no clue.
