  1. Why are nurses the only profession that cannot accept gifts?

Physicians in Massachusetts can also not receive gifts. I'm not sure about other states. But I don't think patients will ever stop bringing in food. Personally, I do not eat food that isn't bought from a store and individually wrapped: 1) norovirus ...
  2. Gave Blood transfusion too fast maybe?

You're not giving us enough clinical information. Is the person still actively bleeding while you're transfusing the blood? Hemolysis? Cold aggultinin antibodies? There are any number of reasons it "only" went to 4.7, however just reading this casual...
  3. Can nurses live a luxurious life?

And then you won't have to work at all if you marry a surgeon!
  4. Why do some practices prefer PAs to NPs?

Sorry: I meant we need better training and this dovetails w #3. We need much better training bc depending on the NPs I meet I am embarrassed to be one sometimes. . And if NPs are going to continue to tout that we have nursing experience as if that's...
  5. Why do some practices prefer PAs to NPs?

I'm running into this in a search for a new job in a new area. I'm an NP in a specialty in which I'd like to consider myself experienced. Where I work now, there are NPs and a few PAs. At any rate, a lot of hiring managers where I'm applying are PAs....
  6. Are NPs expected to be happy and cheerful?

"Happy and cheerful" sounds like like a sexist expectation. No. I'm expected to take good care of my patients and treat them respectfully.
  7. do any NPs wish they did something else

Well, sounds like CRNA isnt what youre looking for anymore. Compared to being an RN, I currently much prefer being an NP and I also loved being an inpatient RN. (Although i do think about going back sometimes!) If you love being an ICU nurse, I woul...
  8. Being hired into an ICU

I graduated from a BSN program 11 years ago and worked intermediate care for about 4 years. After that, I got an NP degree and have been working busy ambulatory stem cell transplant 7 years. This whole time I've wanted to go back and try RN ICU. its ...
  9. I understand what you're saying- I do think they are essential- I certainly do not have the talent to be a psych RN! What I meant as far as limiting is that if the OP chooses to specialize so soon in a program that only grants psych nursing degrees (...
  10. Is this true for all of Canada, ie, one has to go through a specific program to go into psych nursing? Seems limiting. As to the OP, shadowing a psych nurse (when not a nuraing student) sounds hard to do for patient privacy reasons. Regardless, it s...
  11. Quitting during orientation

You're not giving us any specifics as to what you don't like about the job so it's tough to give suggestions. Could it be depression? Relocating can be stressful and downright awful. As for the job and things you don't like, get out of it or into it.
  12. Getting yelled at by a doctor for the first time....

Oh, and apologize once--if at all--for inconveniencing them. They are paid a Dr's salary, presumably. And they know how to turn their pagers off if they need to!
  13. Getting yelled at by a doctor for the first time....

You did not do anything wrong, first-off. My guess is that you feel bad bc you are angry that this Dr behaved so poorly and you were too shocked to respond. Next time, try to shut that down. It took me a while do this, but my favorite way to approa...
  14. Getting yelled at by a doctor for the first time....

If it's a narcotic RX, that cannot be done electronically anywhere I've lived. Wow, Texas, that is craaazy you can send them from home!
  15. NP being used as an RN

Absolutely not. Any potential employer who is worth it will understand that this isn't a good fit and wont look down on you for leaving. You shouldn't be expected to stay in a role that doesn't allow for growth and doesn't utilize you as an NP. One o...
  16. Nurse looked at my Facebook-HIPAA violation ?

Oh- I see now. No, of course not! I rarely even give my direct office number to patients and their family members b/c I'm rarely in my office- people can call the clinic and page me. The MDs, NPs, and RNs have their cell phones on their person to be ...
  17. Nurse looked at my Facebook-HIPAA violation ?

What in God's name are you referencing? I didn't write that. Who would do that?
  18. Nurse looked at my Facebook-HIPAA violation ?

Well, I need my phone for Up-to-date and American Society of Hematology apps and so do my colleagues, so a blanket policy of no cellphones wouldn't work for us. I agree with a policy of no social media though. All the RNs where I work have their phon...
  19. Nurse looked at my Facebook-HIPAA violation ?

the RN should at least know not to do this ON THE FLOOR/in CLINIC. Perhaps there was nothing nefarious behind his looking you up (ie, you may be friends with his friend or something), but really, unprofessional.
  20. Nurse looked at my Facebook-HIPAA violation ?

Definitely unprofessional. I would request to not have this nurse take care of you b/c that is just plain creepy.
  21. You don't need RN experience to get an NP job

Can we just close this down now? Who do we contact?
  22. You don't need RN experience to get an NP job

Fullglass: Bcgradnurse wrote you a very nice, thoughtful reply to get you think about not coming across as so arrogant and to ostensibly stop this madness of a thread. You again attacked her. My advice to you as well is to tone down the defensive att...
  23. Being hired into an ICU

WestCoastSunRN, thank you so much for such a thoughtful reply to my question. So many really, really good ideas, especially how use the MSN degree as a strength and to contact recruiters directly. I will be finding out soon if my family and I will be...
  24. NP jobs that work 3days

Many oncology clinics work 10-hr shifts. Several of the NPs where I work will work 3 days/week, but this is typically only after having worked there full-time for at least a year to have ample time to be fully trained.
  25. You don't need RN experience to get an NP job

Oh my god. Just reading your posts are migraine-inducing. I feel sorry for whomever gets stuck working with you. So essentially: You got a primary care job high up in the mountains, 30 miles from the nearest hospital, where no one else wants to work....
