  1. PMHNP and violent patients

It's more difficult when you're in an open space like a day room. As an NP, I've always tried to position yourself with your back to the wall when I'm talking to patients and also hold something like a binder or clipboard in my hand. When the patient...
  2. What is a reasonable new grad offer?

curious to what your final offer ended up looking like? I think anything around 100k WITHOUT weekend or calls sounds pretty good. For small companies, the first year seems to be about 1 week vacation time, 2-3 wks with larger companies. The extra pro...
  3. Narcotics and diagnostics...

Props to you for tapering patient off benzo, we get so many patients just put on benzos long term just because one doctor started it and noone bothered to D/C it. Was the patient referred to a psychiatrist and therapist following her suicide attempt?...
  4. Looking for advice on two job offers

Congratulations on the job offers. It depends on where you are in life and what kind of schedule you're looking for. how quickly you would be able to see a cardiology patient...would you be able to do more than 3 an hour, 15mins/pt? And what are work...
  5. Psych/Mental Health NP

Wondering what kind of job responsibilities psych/mental health np's typically have. What's a typical day like? Hours? Do you have to take call? Job satisfaction? Is there a high need? I've just started my program but have heard many benefits of bei...
  6. Wasteful practices in the OR?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has noticed any wasteful practices in the OR? (this can pertain to doctors, surgical techs as well as nurses) I am writing a mock proposal about cost saving strategies from material management perspective for a surgica...
  7. Hi, I was wondering if any managers out there have suggestions or things that they have tried in their unit to address the issue of increasing supply costs for their unit? I am writing a mock proposal about cost saving strategies from material manage...
  8. That is good to know! But does that already count in the 1% yearly increase for inflation?
  9. Kim, does it really go up much after you start working for a set salary? I was under the impression that NPs pretty much stay within 10K of what they start out making...
  10. Dixiecup, Yes, I meant to come back and correct that. I would say 25-30 now that I've had more rotations. Wish that I could see 10 patients a day only. When you find a place that allow NPs to only see 10 patients per day let us know.
  11. Clinical Nurse Specialist or Nurse Practitioner?

It does vary by state, where I'm located in there are more opportunities for nurse practitioners. Clinical nurse specialists mainly work in hospitals whereas NPs can work in a larger variety of places
  12. NP admissions essay advice?

All I can come up with is "I want to be a nurse practitioner so I can take care of poor people" and that would sound pretty lame and pretentious on an admissions essay. I'm applying for NP school and the essay topic is your typical outline your caree...
  13. Psych/Mental Health NP

I was pretty excited when I saw how many states allowed for independent practice, but the one problem that I see is that although so many states allow for "autonomous practice" they still require physician supervision with drug writing so this is kin...
  14. Is Psych/MHNP or FNP worth it? *can't decide!*

I'm at a pivotal point in my education this semester. Wondering if I should switch paths from FNP to Psych/MHNP. Torn between the two and it's driving me crazy! Here's my list of pros and cons for each. Tell me what you think... Psych Pros- Slower...
  15. DrFitness, In most programs in Texas, NPs are required to have at least a year of experience, but there are some programs which will take you right out of undergraduate nursing school. I think that is a bad idea and from what I have seen, those stud...
  16. Here are the numbers I used. They are very rough estimates, but you can kinda replace my numbers with yours and calculate your own worth if you can figure out from the front desk people or from billing how much each icd9 & E&M are worth. (My...
  17. TraumaRUS, my gosh! what geographical area are you working in? I'm going to make a mental note not to move there! sounds incredibly difficult to find a job! My reply to the thread: I'm an NP student in Texas, haven't graduated yet, but I've heard tha...
  18. *opinion needed* Keep RN job?

So I'm wondering how important is it for me to keep my RN job while in NP school? Financially, I will be OK if I live incredibly cheaply and take out a few loans, I have 1.5 yr left in the program (the program is 2.5 yrs total). My biggest concer...
  19. How to assess gag reflex?

If you really don't want to stick something in their mouth, you can first make sure that they can answer your questions without slurred speech. Then you can give them a tiny sip of water. I emphasize TINY sip and it must be WATER. I would take the...
  20. Having the knowledge you have now, what would you have done differently during your NP school experience? Please share your knowledge!
  21. how many patients?

So at this family practice clinic, we are open from 8-6:30 with a 1.5 hr break for lunch. And see about 40 patients within that time frame. That equals roughly 4-5 patients an hour. Is this typical? About how many patients do you see a day?
  22. how many patients?

Viva, I agree! I'm not hoping to be filthy rich either. It's just difficult to find a place that has that kind of funding. I would love the luxury of being able to spend more time with patients and less time worrying about coding and billing (especia...
  23. how many patients?

JD, what kind of practice do you work in? What age group are the patients? At our primary care practice we get a lot of strep, influenza, allergic rhinitis, hypertension, diabetes, pretty common stuff. We do get some crazy off the wall things, but mo...
  24. horror stories--are they true?

FNP's are you happy? I've heard such horror stories about how FNP's graduate and aren't able to find positions that pay much more than their original RN jobs (50-60K) and have to work weekends with bad benefits. I am currently in NP school, like cl...
  25. If you were in NP school again, what would you do different?

When you say billing, what specifically should I be asking about? What the codes mean? or what things get billed to insurance and what doesn't?
