Why do you Nurse in the Burn unit ?
Yes..I too would like to know how he AND his mother are doing? It can be very hard on a parent, though it's the parent(s) strength, love and acceptance that will bring a child through. Bless you Faith! I hope, for his mothers sake, that she has or will talk to a family counselor or pastor or someone who can help her cope. Support is so important. Next week..I begin my pre-req's for my Nursing degree! And it is my own daughters experience that brings me to Nursing, as well as other family members, as stated in a previous post. Sonja

Un-necessary classes
thanks so much llg! that a great perspective i will definitely take with me when i begin my pre-reqs and future needed classes. you never know when one of those 'extra' classes you had take will be the source of a great conversation with a patient too! i've thought not so greatly of the classes..but i think you've changed my outlook now. :) future rn-to-be.. sonja

Was anyone a not so great High School student and become a GREAT college student?
hehe, I was a horrible student in High School (graduated '90), but it doesn't affect anything anywhere, thank the Lord. I can't even recall my GPA, I may not have ever bothered to even LOOK! As, Bs, Cs, Ds! I was all over the place depending on mood/if I liked the teacher/if peers were jerks or nice, if my friends were being cool or rotten, etc! One thing I have to be grateful about with aging is the solidity it's brought me. Now I only focus on learning. :) I've A's in college now. It's all about what you put into it, how highly motivated you are, and how well you keep the motivation going (getting to every single class, completing all asignments on time, studying for tests). At age 33 my motivation is 100% different than when I was 16. Aside from my kiddos schools the most important thing in my life to me, and I'm enjoying it tremendously. I think you'll do wonderfully. Gosh yeah! That's me right there!! My high school years, should I say, literally sucked (can I say that here?). My mom passed away also when I was barely 16, so I'm sure that didn't help..not to mention that before that they we're in the process of a divorce. It wasn't easy..but even more-so, peer-pressure in the high school years makes it difficult. If It wasn't for the support of a couple of my teachers who knows where I'd be. Of course, I was stubborn too..I went to school regardless of anything. Maybe I had drive. On the contrary though, my college years so far have been nothing but great! Adults are much different than youth will ever be, well.. normally , And..you are there for the sole purpose of getting an education for a career or to increase your job skills. I went from being at the lower end of my class rank in High school..gpa wise, probably less than a 2.0, to making the President's Honor Roll and Vice-President's Honor Roll twice in college. BIG DIFFERENCE! So Trust me..if you really want to do well you can do it! Just follow your heart, set some goals, study hard, do your best..and you'll do great! I can't wait til I start Nursing school :>)

LPN to RN in Washington...
Erin, HI......:) I am preparing to go to college in January here in Spokane, my home town. I read that SCC is pretty competitive for the RN program..of which I heard too and know. Is there a LESS competitive route to take to get to that degree that you know of? Like, for example, can you get an AA degree thru the college and then transfer, or is that competitive as well? Good grief, I have to get thru all the pre-reqs first!!! :uhoh21: Are all colleges this way when it comes to Nursing programs? Or is it because they only can have so many students at one time? or what. If you don't know, that's okay, but maybe you might know how I can find out. Thanks for any info! Sonja

Will it wreck me? Would it wreck you?
wow...people actually do that? just because their baby has a slight defect, but is otherwise healthy? how sad. i couldn't see turning my back on my child like that. i decided to go into nursing recently, and will start school in january. is this something that the school prepares you to deal with? how do you deal with it? sorry, i just had to comment on that...i was taken aback by it.

Why did you take up nursing? What's your story?
Hi Renee!... I like your honesty...:) Sometimes that's all it takes, and then of course you find out that that IS what you want to do. I also wanted to tell you that we have something in common...hehe...our Birthdays! December 21st! Very cool day..eh? not to mention it's the first day of Winter!!! oh..and my middle name is Renae. Though, I'm 42..but not for long....43 is RIGHT around the corner!! BTW, since we're on the Nursing subject, how WAS school for you? Any subject(s) you find difficult and how did you deal with them? I'm not a nurse yet, I'm waiting for school to start in January to start taking my pre-reqs..then it's on the road to LPN or RN or maybe even BSN..if I can hack the Math and Science courses.

Any stay at home moms or dads returning for nursing degree??
I, too, am facing the same dilemma.... The college I plan to attend has a Campus Daycare, and they say that Students get first grabs at it. It's also a Head Start/ Eceap center as well, so they also have Free and sliding fee scale rates too. I'm not sure my household income with qualify though. Since my son is 4 1/2, I really hoping that he's beable to get in as it would be PERFECT. Otherwise, I may be looking at Kindercare. I would consider evening classes, but my older daughter (17) occasionally works evenings and my other half doesn't always get home in time, as he works until 4 p.m. Otherwise it could be great to go for the evenings classes. Also, I would think an Accelerated program would be great! As long as your getting the Degree you want, and also make sure that you can use those credits for any future schooling should that be something you want to do in the future. Sounds great! :)

Nursing School vs. Rad Tech school
Really...guess I need to research alot more! Thanks for that bit of info! I guess I envision a Nurse, as someone whose job is to care for others in Nursing homes, Hospitals, Clinics. Now, I would imagine you have more opportunities with the BSN or can you do as well with RN as title? Since, I see RN as my goal at this point.

Any stay at home moms or dads returning for nursing degree??
you all are many some very good points for me as well! thanks! :) i've been a sahm since winter of 2000. before that i was going to college to get an aas degree as a medical office specialist( took leave at 6 months prego),so never finished. life's lil twists n' turns................. so,now i've decided that it it time for "mom" to beable to do something for herself ;>)....although my other half and i had spoke of me returning to scchool or work when our youngest is around 3..preschool age or so..he's 4 1/2 now so i'm behind!! oops!! such conflicting feelings when you are planning to place the youngest in daycare/preschool! i will be taking my asset test next wednesday and then getting together with a nursing counselor to see what, if any, credits i can use toward my nursing degree (they are about 5 yrs old now). i'll be looking at some pre-reqs..a good years worth i'm sure! , maybe even an aa in liberal arts if i want to go for my bsn eventually. kinda scares me though..that's alot of math :uhoh21: maybe i'll just consider sticking to the adn...hmm, and then if i still want to i can. so..anyway..yep..i'm returning, finally, can't wait too! just feelin' a bit jittery and excited all at once. fortunately, i have experience and 'maturity'..hehe..on my side! :sofahider

Nursing School vs. Rad Tech school
that's pretty good! sorry to hear about the experience at the rad school though! I don't think any nursing occupation should be looked down upon, as each has it's own specialty, and work just as hard. and as far as 'butt wiping nurses' goes...well, been there-done that, matter of fact at home too with 4 children!! . maybe you didn't mean that literally..but it is a part of life, all of it. it's ashame they think that way. I became certified 20 yrs ago as a cna, my reason for not staying with it was because I was pregnant and took on raising a family instead. and then, ended up taking on other interests as the year went by. now, when I return to school this Winter quarter...I will be relearning cna, and then skills for lpn, and then hopefully ;>)..on to the aas degree for RN..with pre-reqs first though. I see you also have a BSN....that's awesome! I want one....:) ? so RN school is difficult huh? I am kinda worried about the Chemistry and math..as those weren't strengths of mine in high school...though Chemistry was interesting. I think it was just the environment and my peers at the time...would have rather been somewhere else!, which makes a huge difference in how one succeeds. oh..and I can't imagine a RN who doesn't 'touch patients'..isn't that part of the job description? I can't imagine a nurse, period, that doesn't. seems odd to me I guess. oncology, burn unit, icu, geriatrics and pediatrics all interest me. er kinda scares me though...gotta be ready for anything right? but, I suppose after lots of schooling and practice..who knows! now, oncology, doesn't that also deal with leukemia? I trained for a marathon in 2003 with team in training in honor of a leukemia patient and raised funds for cancer research. what an awesome experience! well, I'd better quit writing before I write a book! ;>) thanks much for the input...very much appreciated! nursing student-to-be ?

Nursing School vs. Rad Tech school
really? it looks very interesting though. I can see where you're coming from about the RN programs...definitely, from what I've read so far, there are so many opportunities with nursing. I think I would like the technology of radiology alot as well too. technology intrigues me. fortunately, with nursing, not only do you use technology, but you also help people...both of which I enjoy. how, briefly, would you compare the two positions? especially difficulties in programs? you were afraid I would ask that weren't you??

Anyone a MATH wizz???
I am hardly a math whiz...so I'm not posting an answer, but I just wanted to let you all know that seeing a formula like that kind of gives me an idea of what I'm in for! :uhoh21: Is it just all about conversions? I rremember learning some of that in high school (20+yrs ago!)

Looking for a West Coast Burn Unit
I second the Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Washington one! :) It has an excellent Burn Unit that you should look into. I'm not sure of the pay rates or anything like that as I'm not employed by them but my daughter went there years ago for care, and still does for follow-up surgeries, etc. Another one you might check out is Shriners Hospital for Children in Spokane. They, too, have some treatment and care for Burn survivors. Good luck in your search! :)

Why do you Nurse in the Burn unit ?
My opinion may not count here since I'm not a nurse yet, but in the future if I have a chance to work in a Burn unit I most definitely would take it on. You see, my daughter, at the young of barely 7, was burned and the care she received in the Unit was excellent. I learned SO much. I was very scared..but the Team was very professional and comforting too. Sure, one goes through alot in this Unit, but seeing a patient improve OR just being able to comfort them and help them through from my own personal experience would be wonderful! So, that would be why I would choose Nursing in a Burn Unit. I'll be interested to read the others!

Nursing School vs. Rad Tech school
Funny you should mention the Career path of Radiology. I, too, was considering taking that course and looked into Apollo college but found out clinicals are usually done OUT of state from where I live. A definite no can do for me. It's still intrigues me though, very much. Radiology and Ultrasonography both do. I guess a program is offered through a local hospital here, but I'm thinking that I'll just go for the Nursing program right now and see where it takes me, since it's more readily available. I remember working in a Nursing home some 20 years ago and observing the LPN's and RN's and saying to myself that I'd really like to do that. Well...it's time! :>) Thanks for the topic...I'll be checking it out!
