If you have become a US citizen, this makes you a permanet resident. Green card holders need to renew them every five years, the green card gives you residency but if you do not meet the requirements of being in the US for a certian amount of time, etc., then your green card is not renewed.

So your Visa Screen Certificate needs to be renewed every five years unless you have been given a US passport.

Hope that this clears up things for you.

Green Card holder- a Lawful Permanent Resident of the USA. US Dept of State website.

" With the passage of the Final Rules on July 26 2003, Visascreen Certificates are valid for 5 years. Unless the applicant has obtained a permanent visa ( see definition above) or has become a US citizen, the Visascreen holder must re-apply to CGFNS and obtain a new certificate prior to the expiration date of the original one"

During my application I contacted Savonia Thorne and she put me in contact with Matthew Keiner (the head of the credentials verification department). After all the negatives I had heard about customer service and the like through CGFNS I was very pleased to note how quick, friendly and effecient they were at helping. Thought I would just add that note of hope to this thread.

Green cards actually need to be renewed, they are not issued for life. You have to meet the required stipulations to have it renewed. Such as if you are out of the US for so many years, then it is not going to be renewed.

Dear Suzanne:

THank you in advance for your answer to my question. I am a CGFNS certificate holder, I passed both CGFNS and TOEFL test 4 years ago. Now I want to apply for the visa screen certificate, do I need to take both tests or only the english test ( I was thinking to take the IELTS) to obtain the VSC? Also, for the VSC Do I need to make my school to send the transcripts again , or only need to fill the application for VSC?

Thank you

I offer you my sympathies on your troubles with CGFNS. I am Canadian and going through the process of the VisaScreen. So far I haven't had any problems, but I certainly know many who have.

They did send out an email a while ago saying that they were behind on evaluating communications as they come in by about 20 days.

Want to know where I am having problems?? I was issued a SSN in 2001 when I worked in Connecticut and over the years have somehow misplaced the card .... and SS can't release my number to me unless I physically go into an office in the US. CFGNS and the BON know this .... but still, makes it a bit more difficult.

Have you actually written the NCLEX exam? I would focus on doing that because we are not seeing employers start the petitioning process any longer without the NCLEX being written. There are now only four states that actually require the CGFNS exam in the first place. Things have changed considerably since you started the process.

Are you currently being petitioned by an employer now? Or just wishing to start the process? If you have not started anything as of yet, most definitely focus on getting the NCLEX exam passed as a start. Depending on your country of birth, the wait for a chance at a green card is now at about 7 years. I would hold-off on the VSC as well since it is only valid for five years and it will need to be renewed in most cases.

Much has already been written on this topic in newer and more current threads concerning the retrogression as well and the newer requirements for states here.

Best of luck to you.

Your English exams will need to be repeated since they are valid for only two years. They only last longer if you would have applied for the VSC back then and they would remain valid for the five years of that certificate.

Most definitely do not rewrite the CGFNS exam if you are not going to a state that requires it.

CGFNS normally keeps records for an application open for only two years, so everything will need to be sent in again.

This thread is more than 4 1/2 years old except for the above post that was just made. Things have changed considerably with CGFNS and actually for the better.

And the above poster is not having any issues with CGFNS, they have not done anything with them for four years as well.
