Problem removing male cath

Published

I have a male with no dx of BPH but when attempting to remove F/C yesterday it would not come out. This is in home health and I have to try again today after the wife deflates the bulb for a couple of hours (she says this works) and Yes I completely emptied the bulb even tried position changes and gave him time to relax between attempts. Any suggestions? Is there a trick I've not heard of? Please excuse my spell check isn't working yet and I was wanting some quick imput. Thanks!

Maybe the catheter has adhered to something, like the badder, etc.

I would contact the doctor.

Well you shouldn't cut the cath, however there is a record of how much was put in the balloon right? make sure that amount is taken out right? Have the patient cough and pull firmly but not overly right (critical thinking here, scary). Now if that doesn't work and you have taken out all liquid right ? Put the same amount back in and wait 30 min right ? then remove after removing liquid again.

Yeah, and how many times are you going to try?

If you can't get it out, you can't get it out, you need to call at some point and let someone take care of it that can.

 Got it.. Grab the catheter... Swing said patient around then using a whipping action it SHOULD come out!!! RIGHT :lol2::lol2::lol2:

If it won't come out after trying several attempts I would get Super Doc to the rescue!!;)

Thanks for all the replies! When I got to the home today the wife had gotten it out! Thank God! All good ideas, I had planned on cutting the bulb port today, if no dice sending him to the hospital for removal. I had thought about trying Sabby NC's tip yesterday but thought I'd better not since he is also on Coumadin. LOL
