Greetings brave friends:
So, after working hard to successfully complete probation in OR and gain my fully restored RN license I applied for state-to-state endorsement in HI. To my shock it was denied. Reason: I was simultaneously licensed in good standing in two other states at the time of the arrest in my home state. In response to a DUI arrest in OR three years ago I Voluntarily Surrendered those licenses in those states when they came after me. The board did not understand why, "I did not fight to keep my licenses in those two states," and, "it seems shady."
My cost for separate attorneys in those two states would have been about 30K plus.
My horrible crime?: 3 glasses of wine one night while on-call BAC 0.13 did not enter a facility nor see a patient. No conviction as it was dismissed a year later under a first offender program in OR. The board also had a big question about a 1982 (1982!!!) arrest for indecent exposure with a final conviction for disturbing the peace fine of $50.00 suspended leading them to question my moral character and whether I am a "life long repeat offender."
I am a 62 year old granny.
I WILL:
1. Keep my precious unencumbered OR license intact and current. I WORKED for that puppy fair and square.
2. One time only: fly to appear before the HI BON and apply for an appeal and reconsideration.
Then I will rest knowing I have done a great job.
I contacted a HI attorney who quoted me a $250.00 per hour fee with an $8500.00 retainer. NO THANK YOU.
I WILL ALSO:
Relocate to Hawaii as planned. Start my precious massage therapy program. Live a full and healthy life in my hippy cooperative community and heal from the horrible experience of of nursing. They can have it.
For healing purposes I need to sign off Allnurses now. I will re-check in when I receive the final appeal decision from the HI BON.
Blessings and love to you all and (((((hugs)))))...

Sorry to hear that attitude prevailed. You would have thought they would have taken into consideration that OR now thinks you have been punished enough. But, such is nursing.

After all is said and done, you may not be a nurse but you will be happy and healthy.

Thanks for keeping us updated. I hate how so many of these situations people post about never get updates.
I hope that whatever happens, you find what you are looking for and what will make you happy.

Ultimately we must all learn what happiness is, on a personal level, and strive for that. Keeping the focus on that regardless of how things outside of us try and define the whole of who we are is imperative.
No matter how hard licensing authorities try, they cannot do that. The most they can do is tell us yes or no.
WE are the ones that must decide who we are and how we shall live.
Paidmydues, you are a fine example of a human who lives fully and completely. My only regret is that sharing that within the nursing profession is so hurtful. The need for nurses that have come out on the other side from difficulties is great, as they have a measure of compassion that is so sorely needed.
Looking forward to hearing about any updates you care to share.

PaidMyDues I know you said you wouldn't be back for awhile but I wanted to tell you I'm pulling for you. I love reading how clear you are about who you are, what you want, and what you will and will not accept from anyone else!
I wish you all the best, picturing you on the beach in Hawaii hanging 10!
