Private LPN Schools In Maryland

There are no private LPN schools in MD they are all through colleges. Personally I think it's a money thing. All the private schools they had are now closed down, which is sad considering the shortage of nurses. I live in the Woodlawn area and drive to Hanover, PA( about and hour and 10 min.) every day to attend their 1 year PN program. The school is great and much better than going to DC as there is no traffic going into or coming out of PA and my school takes Pell grants ( which the schools on DC don't, you have to pay $8000 or more by the time you start classes). I choose to do this because I didn't want to spend 2 years( because of the pre-reqs) to get my LPN, when it really only takes one year. The drive is long especially on clinical days when I have to get up at 4am, but worth it because I graduate in January!!. This year really flew by and I'm glad that I will be able to practice as a nurse in a short while. The name of the school I attend is the Hanover Practical Nursing Program and it is ran through the Hanover Public School District. Hope this helps anyone interested in becoming an LPN but frustrated with MD and there lack of options for schooling.

I know the RN programs are tough to get into but there are a ton of LPN programs in the state. Almost all the community colleges in the Balto. area have an LPN program and they aren't nearly as hard to get into as the RN. Check the mbon for a list of schools. Good luck. Jules

Yes, there are a ton of LPN schools in MD but like I said they are all through the colleges. Once an applicant completes all the pre-reqs and gets "accepted" into the PN program they have already been in school for a year, when they could have went to a school out of state and in that same year completed a PN program.

Interesting, I wasn't aware there were PN programs without pre-reqs. How does that translate into credit if you decided to go for your RN?

When I go on to earn an ADN, I will have the option to "test out" of some of the pre-req courses such as A&P. I will still have to take other classes like Micro, Psych, Speech etc.. However as an LPN I will get credit for the first year of Nursing school. I choose this route because at least I can make LPN money ( much better pay than a CNA, which I am) while going to school and the hospital that I'm going to work at will pay most of the tuition.

That makes sense to me. I also commuted 90 minutes to do my LPN because of a pre-req at the local CC that I hadn't finished and they wouldn't let me even apply with it in progress. Tell the truth it wasn't bad having time in the car just to listen to tunes and relax, lol.

I've spent quite a bit of time and money chasing all the different pre-reqs because each program is a bit different in what they insist on you having. Some want chemistry, some want speech, some want 2 English classes some want a computer class etc. its kind of annoying if you ask me. Right now I'm trying to find a school that will let me scoot in the BSN program under an accelerated option because even though I don't have a degree I have plenty of credits, most of them sciences. Either that or I'm headed back to the CC route for my ADN this summer.

FWIW inquire at the school you decide to attend about what CLEPs they take because I've done quite a few that way but again each school is different in which one they want.

So Jules, Your a LPN. Where do you work? Nursing home, Hospital, Dr. Office? Just want to know if there is any hope for me working at a hospital as a LPN. I really don't want to work at a Nursing home for various reasons. Just curious.

The money is going to be at nursing homes but we are lucky to have some hospitals that hire LPNs. Last I knew, Union Memorial, Harbor, Kernan and I think Northwest hire LPNs. Spring Grove over in Catonsville is a state psych hospital that hires LPNs and I believe most of the VA hospitals will also. I've also seen ads for a company over in Columbia that hires LPNs for telephonic nursing which might be a cool job especially while in RN school.

Lol I was just complaining about this on the LPN to RN forum here! I'm really disapointed that Excelsior isn't valid in MD anymore. The "plan" is to start a bridge program somewhere this summer. Right now I'm just doing a couple of pre-reqs so depending on which program I get into I'll have all my bases covered. Everywhere is different, no one wants to give a hint as to the chances of being accepted, there is the in-county/out-of-county thing at many of the CCs. Its exhausting.

When do you graduate?
