help! i am thinking about becoming an independent medicaid and private pay home health nurse, i have been working in the home health field for 3 yrs. i have the provider packet from medicaid, but it does not give much info. anyone know of a good resource on policy, procedure, guidelines, covered expenses, pay scale????? any help will be greatly appreciated. email: [email protected]

nursemarie, i too, am a private duty nurse and i recently registered with a new website called americancaregiver.com which is going to enable me to work smarter. this site links caregivers with careseekers via the internet. it is going to be a huge force in internet healthcare industry very soon. right now they are starting and GA and soon in FL, and will be natl. very soon. all caregivers can register for free now, regardless of where you are. names and qualifications of us caregivers are listed on the site after registration, the care seekers can contact and hire us directly. they can also provide you the info you stated you needed. check it out!

Dear nursemarie, I have been in home health for 17 years and wouldn't advise anyone to go into it. Especially to become Medicare or Medicaid certified. It has been a headache with all the changes and government regulations.

Policies and procedures I wrote myself after I received the state's packet on the rules and regs for home health, I made the application and was surveyed for my license. I would advise you to get an accountant who knows home health and the system, and a great consultant.

Nursemarie - Looks like we are both on the same wavelength. I was perusing the internet, asking the same questions, when low and behold there is the "allnurses" posting! This site always seems to be where I end up, I don't know why I don't learn to start here-LOL.

I, too, am researching how to become a private duty medicare provider. I keep running into a lot of red tape. Perhaps we can keep each other posted as to any progress we are making. I know there are lots of forms, but which specific forms, I'm not sure.

I am in Ohio, and subscribed to this link, so we can stay in touch (if you want). Also, I don't know if the rules/regulations differ from state. Then there is always the credentialing thing. I do know, that we could start off as an independent provider somehow. I will keep researching and keep you posted.

Take a look at the "Entrepreneurs in Nursing" section at allnurses. It has some beneficial stuff for going into business.

I know this is a very old message - but I have to add I coulnd't disagree more - i work as a private duty nurse & get reimbursed thru medicaid & on a scale from 1 to 10 - it's an 11 - in terms of both the work & the money.

Lisa1203, I too am looking to get a medicaid provider number. what state are you in and do you have a company or are you an independent contractor. I am considering opening a homemaker/respite agency and trying to get info.

I live in New York and I found a great woman that worked for a staffing agency for 12 years and she has her own business teaching nurses how to become independent providers (private duty nurses).
