priority question about MI patient

Published

I am so confused on this one. Typical question-- and I've seen different versions of this-- a pt comes into the ER with chest pain and probably MI. Orders are O2, EKG, morphine, labs, etc. What do you do first?

My teacher says EKG, O2, labs, morphine, and other drugs

My textbook says O2, EKG, labs, morphine and other drugs

My NCLEX book has the choices of morphine, EKG, IV start, labs. It says morphine is the correct choice.

So, what does the NCLEX consider the right answer??

I just passed my last class final and just have preceptorship and NCLEX to do.

Thanks!

This is exactly why this test is so amiguious, and perhaps why so many medical errors. I'm just guessing but it seems for such an uncomplicated question that there would be one protocal for NCLEX purposes not per hospital. I know a lot of factors play into any given situation but the question @ hand is straight forward + yet there are so many different answers. I'm so confused.

Can Anyone offer any insight?

I was told by an NCLEX instructor it's ONAM.

my prof says ABC priority

so oxygenation comes first before alleviating the pain or improving circulation via morphine vasodilation.

next is the morphine via iv infusion since oral drugs are not realistic I. this time sensitive scenario, and since most morphine solutions are available via incorporation or infusion,
