Prerequisite(s) progress thread

Published

I am going to post here as I go to keep myself motivated.

I found a school nearby that takes straighterline, portage, etc. for prerequisites and I can save a good amount of money going through de-MSN program.

Done:

(Statistics) Straighterline Business Statistics & Aleks Introduction to Statistics. Finished both in 12 days. The Aleks was basically a freebie and the school accepts the Business Stat course which allowed a more robust calculator.

Pending:

Chemistry I no lab, A&P I&II with lab, Microbiology with lab, Biochemistry, Abnormal Psychology, Developmental Psychology.

I’m going to start Chem now, any suggestions on order for the others is appreciated.

6/18 tests done. Test 5&6 contain a few more difficult questions ergo "which of the following is false" which require obscure knowledge of specific systems that I don’t think anyone would remember off the top of their head. Still, this is by far the most enjoyable Straighterline class I’ve taken.

17/18 done. All that remains is the final. Approaching burnout. Need to finish A&P 1 so I can go back to reading and do A&P 2 before the 30 days of my Straighterline membership are up.

Finished my thesis work for the semester. Not technically a prereq but now that's it's done I should be able to sprint through Chem I LOL.

Congratulations. I don’t envy you writing a thesis. My wife’s thesis was a real bear.

aleks really helped me with the calculation aspect of chem 1. Worth the $20 a month.

A&P 1 is finished, 90 overall. Super happy.

Now to read for A&P 2 and finish it within the month, then start the labs / psych classes.

Done: Chem, Stats, Microbio, A&P 1

Todo: A&P 2, A&P & Microbio lab(s), developmental and abnormal psych.

Roughly 9 weeks in. I hope to have all prerequisites done in the next 7 weeks before our newest addition arrives.

Good job on the A&P! Just finished mod 4 of 6 for Chem 1 with Portage. I also just signed up for their nutrition class. I heard nutrition is the easiest pre-req, hoping to fill time with this when my brain cant take anymore Chem for the day.

CONGRATS! You will be done in no time. I strongly considered portage so I could attend Marquette, but cost was a factor, plus I was wanting to take the prerequisites for medical school from a 4 year brick and mortar university once I qualified for in state tuition. Using Straighterline I get to familiarize myself with the sciences before actually taking the classes at a university should I decide later on I want to pursue medicine.

I considered the MD route for a split second but the eight year total commitment with residency scared me off (and the nightmare stories of not getting matches). Taking Chem has made me realize nursing is the right call for me. I am doing well in it (above a 95) but it is incredibly tedious and making me realize I only have enough interest in natural sciences to make it a means to a care giving profession, not the focus itself.

As for costs, GI Bill is my saving grace!

Indeed. I have about a year of GI Bill left, but could qualify for voc rehab beyond that; just have to time it right.I honestly couldn’t see myself doing bedside nursing too long I’ve spent enough time in a hospital to know it would not be for me, I require some autonomy. Np has my interest.

I couldn’t see trying to bite the bullet for me right now for the md; it seems to me a safer bet to pursue np through local accelerated programs and only go md if I were accepted into one of the local md programs like medical college if Wisconsin. I’d have nothing to lose at that point really, with clinical experience and a good salary behind me if I weren’t accepted.

Yea I am definitely trying for the NP (PMHNP) route as well. I have no issue with being an RN but mental healthcare is my passion and PMHNPs can prescribe and do psychotherapy so I feel like little is lost functionally.

Are you applying for direct NP programs? I am hoping for Columbia or Boston College since both have a direct entry DNP.

There are three options locally that take Straighterline. An 18 month direct entry BSN / MSN at Alverno College, a 16 month absn at Herzing, and lastly A more traditional BSN with generous transfer acceptance at Bryant Stratton which I’d like to avoid. Herzing would work out about the same time wise because I’d be doing a pmhnp track MSN ASAP after graduating, and with the generalist MSN from Alverno I have the same intention but it would be just a pmhnp cert. Time wise there is little difference.

portage says they don’t take gi bill, how did you swing that?

Oh yea, Portage is out of pocket. I wouldnt use my months on them anyways since they are affordable. I am thinking a year down the road when I am looking at the 50k+ per year price tags of DNP programs I am looking at LOL.
