Prereqs Done....Now What?

Published

I have been in a CUNY school for about a year and a half now and have finally completed all prereqs to be considered as a candidate for the Nursing Program. My GPA is 3.4, I have taken and passed the PAX RN exam which CUNY requires as their nursing program entrance exam. I have spoken with the Nursing Dept about whether or not I would be able to get in for the coming Spring 2011 semester of clinicals. They have told me to wait for an answer on January 6th via email. I am nervous because as I wait I am unable to register for other classes. Suppose there is no room for me in the program for this semester and I need to wait until Fall 2011? There are still other courses I can take toward my degree but for some reason I am unable to register pending the Nursing Departments decision. Not sure if this is a financial aid thing or a registrar issue. Meanwhile the registration process is over. So where does that leave me if I don't get in. I hope I do, but there may be a chance that I don't get in. What then? Should I apply for other nursing schools now? All CUNY nursing programs are completely full with waiting lists and I can not afford a private college. I would consider taking out a loan at this point but then I would have to go through a whole other process for private nursing schools that may take even longer. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am starting to become discouraged at this point. I know I can be an excellent nurse some day but the pressure of just getting into a program is quite frustrating.:uhoh3:

I think you should wait and see whats up before looking at other nursing programs.

I understand that you are nervous but please just wait. You might just get good news...

be patient, look at other schools too.. apply, apply and apply as much as you can

I'm not much of a sit and wait type. I'd suggest researching your other options, making a list and then figuring out what plan B would be *IF* you don't get in. If you do get in then it was something to do to keep your mind distracted. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your response. I guess the best thing to do was wait as you said. They called and I have been accepted into the program!! Thanks for your support, I needed to hear that.

I didn't see any mention of co-reqs.. ?? If you have them, which I'm sure you do.. get those done!! The more classes youhave completed and at the institution to where you've applied, the better. Nursing school is not that hard to get into if you follow the guidelines, so don't worry honey!

Thank you so much for your response. I just got the call today and they told me I have been accepted! There are a few co-reqs I still need so looks like I will be taking them along with my nursing major classes. Thank you again for the advice!

Congratulations DoingGodsWork!!! :clpty:

Maybe you can try a public school in NJ or a hospital nursing program? Rutgers is relatively affordable (my alma mater). I know they have a nursing program in New Brunswick. You can also try Kean in Elizabeth or NJCU in Jersey City. I would advise against taking out student loans at all costs.

I am sure they will have space for you in the classes though.

Doesn't make sense that you can't register for other classes... I would think that you could register for them just so long as you are able to drop the classes by the time you hear back from nursing.

I would ask a counselor or admissions rep if there is any way around that.
