Hi Everyone!
I'm planning on applying to University of Florida's Accelerated BSN program next January 2011 and wanted to get some advice on GRE study guides, pre recs and any other advice you think I would benefit from.
I graduated from Tufts University in '08 with a BFA and a 3.4 GPA. I'm currently living in New York City, but moving back home to FL in March to start the pre rec courses for the program at the local community college this summer.
Any advice would be great! Anything you felt especially hard in the application process? Did you have an interview with Mr. Foote before you applied? I emailed him a few weeks ago about my interests and questions about the website, but he hasn't replied yet.
Also I keep checking in on the UF Nursing website for admission requirements and program overview and it's been down for some time now. It says that they are updating the site, but I would like to get the correct information in terms of pre recs and currents requirements for the program. Anyone have this problem too or know anything about it?
I look forward to hearing from you and learning from your responses.
Thanks so much!
NP Sam

Well, I have about three more weeks until I find out whether Im accepted but I can give advice on the application process. Yes, the ABSN part has been down for some time. Im curious about what they might change too! The prereqs for this year were statistics, anatomy, physiology, and microbiology.
There is no interview. Because there is no interview you should make your statement of goals stand out because it is basically your interview. I had two of my professors read and edit mine. They made sure I answered everything that was supposed to be answered in my statement. One also provided an academic reference.
GRE-- perhaps the most dreaded part. Do not wait until December to take the GRE for the first time!!! I used Barrons study guide and GRE for dummies. In the "Dummies" book the math is really advanced, but in the Barron's book it has a lot of what you need to know. Memorize the 350 words, and more if you can. You will be so glad you did. There are those who pay for a GRE class but I didn't want to. The writing section of GRE is required.
Do you have specific questions?

Hello, I was just accepted to the UF absn program so I'll try and give you some tips.
In your statement of goals, make sure you say that you have an interest on continuing past the BSN, like becoming a nurse practitioner. I have heard that they really want their nurses to continue on with school. Even if you are not sure if this is what you want, I would at least imply an interest.
As for the GRE, you can only study so much for it. I spent about 2 1/2 months preparing and that was at least a month too long. I studied so much vocab and the ones that were on the exam I still didn't recognize. I mainly used the free software that you can get off the GRE website. It's called power prep. Keep practicing until you are satisfied with your score (it gives you an estimated score). I got a 1280.
Also, I would make sure you have at least some volunteer work that relates to nursing. You want to have something to put on your CV. I volunteered one day a week at mayo.

i totally agree with you on stressing that you want to continue your education in your statement...i heard from multiple sources that helps and i just got accepted as well!!
the gre was also what scared me the most too! i work full time and took my pre-req's after work so i actually took a kaplan course...they material they give you and the practice tests are good but after taking the test i think just studying from any of those books and taking the gre's practice tests would be fine. definately study as many words as you can...the math was a lot easier on the actual test than it was in my kaplan course, but vocab, there's no way around that!!
i agree i think it helps to have work/volunteer exp. i work for a surgeon now so i got a recc. from him and it looks good.
also try to make all a's in your pre req's because the gpa part is very competitive--as i'm sure you already know.
but good luck!! hopefully you'll be as excited as us this time next year!!
