Pregnant: Chance of being Fired in the First 90days

Published

HI everyone!

So after searching for my first RN job since December, I was finally blessed with a job in LTC last week. During orientation, it was made clear that we work in an 'at will state' which means the employer can terminate employment at anytime, and without reason if it falls within the first 90 days of employment. Well, I am almost 14 weeks pregnant, which means by the end of my first 90, I will be about 7 months and most likely HUGE! Oh yeah, did I mention I have NO experience as an RN???

So my question, what do you think the chance of them letting me go is once they figure out I'm pregnant and not fat? Now, I know a company cannot legally terminate an employee for being pregnant, but that would be next to impossible to prove if they decided to X me before the 90 days are up. So should I expect be fired once they realize what's up?

Oh and for what it's worth: I plan on taking 4 weeks max when the baby comes (granted it is an uncomplicated ag delivery) and I am a natural born breeder, meaning I may get huge, but I carry my babies well (few aches and pains, little to no waddling, I basically function normally, just with a big belly) so I really don't anticipate any problems being able to perform.

I know you're new to the game, but believe me. Managment is not your friend. Ever. The minute they think you no longer make them money, or you're going to cost them money, you're gone. This is just at my hospital, your mileage may vary...

Absolutely. It is a business. Bottom line. They will smile and appear to be so kind and understanding, well, as long as everything is giong their way.

I mean, look at people injured on the job. Many facilities hire top-notch lawyers to fight the injured worker...and they will fight... over something that the facility is indeed responsible for!

I was five weeks when I started my first nursing job. I'm rather big, so I was able to hide it for a while, but let the cat out of the bag around 9 weeks (I let my preceptor know before that in case a smell hit me wrong and I started gagging :lol2: ).

i am 17 weeks i am almost at my 90 day mark... i left this hospital 2 years ago and came back on very good terms. i'm fortunate to where i am just barely showing... but i too am scared to death to tell my boss i'm pregnant. i've bought all new scrubs to be more comfortable and people think i have just put on a few pounds.

i am getting to the point though where i am scared for my babys well being, not only for the infectious disease part, but for dangerous patients... i had a patient last week that was combative and kicking and spitting and i asked another nurse to come in with me to give her her meds, bc she was on IV verapamil anyways, so i needed an RN to come with me anyways. i just want to get cleaner, safer patietns--no special breaks.

the father also works on the floor which makes it kind of uglier (we got hired together, they knew we are a couple), but he's an RN and he contract critical care staff--so he's much more valuable to them than i am... and if i go, he goes too...

we decided to tell our boss when i am 20 weeks, for the safety of the baby. i am hoping for all the best.

best of luck to you, and i hope you are able to stay at your job and have a very healthy pregnancy and baby!
