Hi All!
I hope you will be able to assist me.
My sister, who will be 39 in October and has two kids ages 2 and almost 5, may be preggers again. (Believe me, her age is the least of my worries!) Anyway, the 1st day of her LMP was like the 13th of July and she hasn't had another one. So, she goes to her doc when she was around a week late and he says it's too early to do a pregnancy test (huh? what about a blood test?) and tells her to wait a week. In the mean time, she calls me b/c she is on meds for her BP and she wants to know if it is safe to keep taking them. I asked her if the same doc prescribed the BP as the one who wouldn't give her a pregnancy test; she said no, so I told her to call the doc that scripted the BP med and talk with her regarding this. She called that doc and she told her to come in for a pregnancy test. So, she goes to the doc and does a urine test and it's negative but because at this point she is two weeks late, the doc does a blood test. This was last Monday and my sister hasn't heard back from the doc yet. She says they gave her a number to call to get the results but when she calls, she is told there are no results available for her.
Here's my question, how long does it take to get results from a blood test back? Also, does anybody have any insight as to what may be going on here?
Thanks in advance! (Sorry it's so long!)

First of all is she using contraceptives? Is she breastfeeding?
There could be any number of reasons why she has not had menses. She should NOT discontinue her meds, however. She obviously has seen a physician and most probably is not pregnant.
The results should be in very shortly. She may be having perimenopausal s/s. Just TOO many to list here.
I think she is on the right track. I wish her good luck.

Why doesn't she just buy a pregnancy test herself? If she is two weeks late it would be accurate.

If she is negative at home, and still doesn't have a menstruation, she still needs to go to the Dr...obviously.
However, to comment on your post, I definitely agree!!!
Dr.'s use the same home tests as you can buy at a local drug store, grocery store, or discount store.
(...but they charge $30+ for an office visit for what a store charges 5-12 dollars for.
Another factor not mentioned that could alter a cycle is stress. So, one never knows. :)

Definitely just have your sis buy a kit from the drugstore, they're very accurage early on.
I work in a clinic and it is policy to not call patients if their tests are negative (I think this is not appropriate in many situations because the patient is left hanging). They seem to think, no news is good news.... She can certainly call the nurseline. Urine preg tests come back within 10-15 minutes and an hcg blood test takes 30 minutes where I work.
Thanks for replying.
She took a HPT before the 1st doctor's appt and it was negative.
She is under a ton of stress at the moment - okay she's always under stress due to her idiot husband - and like I said, she is almost 39, so it could be pre-menopause.
I just don't understand why the 1st doc told her it was too early to do a pregnancy test when she was a week late and the 2nd doc told her the blood results wouldn't come back for at least 7 days.
