Hello all,
I am running into a problem and I'm wondering if anyone on here has gone through the same thing. I'm interested in an Accelerated BSN program in NYC; either Pace or Downstate. Because I have a B.A. in something totally unrelated (film!) I have to pretty much start all over and take about 6 pre-requisites. I have been taking them at LaGuardia Community College, and it's gone pretty smoothly up until now. I have 4 classes left: Microbiology, Chemistry, and Anatomy & Physiology 1 and 2.
Well, I just found out that in order to get into the Anatomy & Physiology classes I also have to complete Fundamentals of Biology 1 and 2. Downstate and Pace do not require these extra courses. I don't really want to pay for another 2 semesters of classes that I don't even need for nursing school (plus I don't want to spend another 6 months finishing up these darn things), but I'm nervous that it's the only way I will be able to meet Downstate or Pace's requirements. Does this sound weird to anyone? Has anyone run into this problem? I am looking into other schools in the CUNY system at the moment but I thought I'd ask on here. Has anyone run into the problem of having to take more classes than necessary?
Thanks...

Ask them if you can change your status to 'non degree' and take A & P without the Bio classes. The tuition will be a tad more, but it's worth a try. I took calculus at Lag CC a few years ago as a non degree student.

Is this a new thing? I attended Lagcc and took A&P I and II (2005)and Biology was not a prereq. I also have a BA in something totally unrelated. Is it possible for you to go to the Department head and plead your case?

There is about 8 or 9 cuny schools that don't require Biology to take A&P. Some of them may require one Chemistry course but you need that anyway. The only thing the Biology help you with if your applying to a PA program.

Your best bet is to take NYDreamer's advice. I too had a bachelor's in another field and attended LAGCC for my prereqs as a non-degree student. I didn't have to sit for the cuny exam and the difference in price was not much, nor did I have to take any prereq BIO classes.
Thanks for the advice.
I started off as non-degree student. I changed to a degree student once I discovered that non-degree students have last pick when registering for their classes. The classes fill up very quickly at LaGuardia, and even if you are a degree student there is a very good possibility that you will be shut out of the classes you want to take. Since becoming a degree student I have had no problems registering for the classes I want to take... until now.
Then speak to a counselor explain to them that you are a 2nd degree student & there is a possibility that they may let you register for the class.
Good Luck, as I so vividly remember that registration at LAGCC is a NIGHTMARE. LOL! :D
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you--don't give up & if they give you a hard time you may have to take the class at another cuny school.
But, hopefully it will not come to that.
