Pre req's- grossmont vs national university-san diego

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Ok so I have been off and on in community college...taking breaks...having babies, getting married, new jobs, living life. All general ed for my ASN is complete EXCEPT for the pre req's which I have been putting off because...to be honest? They intimidate me! Im going to take chemestry for summer and am so nervous. How hard are the anatomy, physiology, and micrbiology? The only other thing that worries me is that I wont be able to take more than 1 class per semester. I work full time, and have 2 children. It was even hard for me to take algebra & english together...let alone two bio classes. I feel so discouraged but I know that this is what I want... and it's always what I wanted. Another thing is the wait list!!! I know there's not enough staff but it makes it that much harder. I was thinking of going to apply to National University but im scared...I hear it's too fast paced?? But they did tell me there is no "wait list" to start nursing courses...not sure how true that is?? The only other reason why I thought of Grossmont is because they have night & weekends. Im the bread winner in my family so I cant quit my job and I have great benefits for myself, hubby, and children. Im so worried Im not capable of going to nursing school and working full time. Please some encouragement? :bowingpur Has anyone sucessfully finished nursing school & worked full-time???

Hey Fairiewand!! Long time no chat. Life gets so busy especially with school! So congrats on being nearly done with your LVN!!! Soooo cool. Did you ever end up applying to NU? I did confirm with my advisor that all the classes are in Rancho Bernardo :( :( What a drive huh??? I mean I didn't even apply to CSU San Marcos specifically because I didt want to drive all the way to North County. Looks like I may have to if I get in. Oh well....I guess at this point I will go anywhere that will have me.

How are you?

Hi SDmamma! I am completely done with my LVN but cannot apply anywhere until I have my license in hand as they have to see that for me to do the LVN-RN bridge. I will probably apply to Grossmont as I already have a large debt to repay :(

RB is a long drive but I've heard that you only have to go one day a week like on Friday. Maybe they encourage carpooling? Plus you are driving the opposite way of the heavy traffic! :D

I go to National University also in San Diego and I can tell you that it is much more difficult then JCs. I like the fast paced classes and I have done extremely well. I applied to the nursing program in January so just waiting to hear back now. I currently have a 3.95 GPA and I am finishing up my last science class this week (A&P II). I found that A&P has been the hardest course I have taken at national, the course I have enjoyed most has been micro.

I saw some posts regarding whether JCs would be better to go to, I would think that it just depends on the person. I saw a bunch of posts saying Grossmont was a better choice then National, but I find it kinda funny that they lost their accreditation (however they got it back) when they are supposedly "better".

Anyhow my 2 cents.

Fairewand, congrats on being done with your LVN...I guess I missed that in your previous post. Hopefully they send u your liscense soon so you can go ahead and apply. I too applied to Grossmont and I am on the waiting list, but my letter said the wait is 3-4 years OR more. Yikes!

Oh that is terribly long! That's why I did LVN. If I get my license soon I might be able to get into grossmont in January 2009 because they have a different program than the new nursing students with no experience. I will be with all LVN's getting their RN. I hear class is only on Fridays all day so it sounds like LVN students don't mix with the other students.

I am taking microbiology in the summer :uhoh3: I did get into that class yay! :yeah:

Ooooo let us know when you get into NU nursing program ok? I would especially like to know where your clinicals are located.

I work with someone who is in the nursing program right now at NU and she says they have raised the tuition :crying2:

I just want to finish a degree so badly that I'm thinking of applying to just get a general degree. I like that you take one class at a time and just study that.

I just received my acceptance letter on the 1st of this month (May)!

I have a friend that is currently in the nursing program at NU and I believe she said it was done at a scripps hospital.

I heard the response was usually 6-8 months for the nursing program. I got my response in about 3.5 months. YMMV.

The current cost is $30k for all nursing classes up through ADN and $40k for BSN. You can only apply to the BSN program however (and get your ADN on the way)

Congrats!:yeah: I just got my acceptance letter for National today:p. I'm so excited to be done with prereq's and to be able to start learning the real meaty stuff. Which cohort are you going to be in? I'll be starting in October!

Congrats! When did you apply, and how long did it take to get a response?

Just FYI - the LVN-RN program at Grossmont is lecture one day and then lab/clinicals one day. At least it is in general. I hear the schedule gets more hectic later on down the line. I have to say, I like being in a class with all LVNs. Everyone has so much experience! The learning environment is way more advanced than LVN school. It's good to hear everyone's stories and people help you as you learn skills. I like getting the scoop about the different places people are working, too.

Good luck. :)

Thanks SDMamma! :D I received notification that they had my application in hand on Jan 14, 08, so it took about 3 1/2 months to go through the whole process. I wanted to bug them once a week to check on the status of my application, but I held myself to calling them only once a month.:saint:

The lady at nursing admissions told me that rejection letters go out first, so the longer your application takes, the better.

When did you put your app in?

I received the notification that My app had been received on 3/25. I have not yet called to check, but I did hear from a friend that rejection letters come quicker but I dont know what truth there is to that. I also have a friend, a male LVN who applied for the post bachelors BSN instead of the LVN-BSN and despite all of his qualifications, was denied after 4 months so I don't know why they waited that long to reject him. I don't know what his gpa was though, as he completed his bachelors in the Philipines, but he did his LVN here at Maric. He did say his accuplacer scores were low.

I tested into college english and 12B math. Would you mind sharing with me what your accuplacer level was? I am just trying to guage my chances.

Thanks!! Congrats again on NU.
