My husband is in the military and we are currently out of the country for the next three years. I have my basic college courses done, but need to finish the nursing prerequisites like A&P, microbiology and psychology. Since there isn't any other choice for me but to do the classes online, I'm wondering if anyone has any advice for completing all the classes online or if I should just wait until I get back to the states (not preferred). My goal is to be eligible to apply for an ADN program wherever we live next. I'd love to have any advice from nurses who have been in similar predicaments. Thanks!

There are a number of schools that offer this.

Thanks for the response. I have already searched the forums and know the available schools I can take those classes at. Perhaps I should have worded my question better. I see that the conventional wisdom is to contact the school that I want to attend ahead of time to see if they'll accept my online courses. I cannot do that because I won't know which schools I liked to attend, depending on the area I will be in. For example, before moving to my current location, we lived in Colorado. I discussed with an advisor about taking my prerequisites online and then applying for a spot in the local nursing program there. The advisor informed me that online credits aren't accepted. I never attended the nurse information meeting to ask that question myself because the advisor was so condescending to me and I took her word for it. I'm trying to avoid taking classes repeatedly and waste more time never getting my degree.
Generally, I would think prerequisites from established colleges and universities are more accepted than schools that are online-only. A class from Johns Hopkins, for example, may have more cachet than one from NursingABC - not that that's right or a good thing, but it's often true. Without knowing exactly where you plan to go, it's definitely hard to choose where to do your pre-reqs, but most schools accept online classes. I considered an online A&P class because it would work better for my schedule, but then I reconsidered because I think I need to actually dissect something in order to really learn how things fit together. I do plan to take Micro online, though, because I can grow cultures at home easily enough - just look in my fridge! 😜
I would definitely check with other programs and don't let that advisor get you down. Some people and programs aren't ready to change and adapt to the times.

Take your classes from a community college or university. I was able to take all my prereqs online through my local university. You can't tell by looking at my transcripts that they were online. I was able to learn a lot and received A's in all my classes. I watched a lot of youtube videos and did fine.
Definitely check community colleges! I meant to put that in my original reply. I'm in NYS, and a number of our CCs offer online pre-reqs, and as BusyBee says, you can't tell that they're online courses.
Thank you all so much for the advice! It's a little off putting to keep moving and being told my credits don't count and to repeat the same classes just to move again before I accomplish anything. I'll stick with PPCC in Colorado and hope that whichever school I choose to complete my nursing degree they will accept my credits.

I can tell you that all the schools in California at any rate require core bio lab classes (Micro, Anatomy, & Physio ) be taken in person. Its a state by state, not school by school issue. Each BON has its own requirements. So those 3 you probably want to wait on. The tricky part is if you take online bio or chem, will THAT be accepted as a pre-req for Micro, etc.. worst case scenario is to take chem and bio online, if you have to retake, at lleast it'll be a bit easier. One possible exception you could check out is Arizona State. A friend of mine works for Starbucks, and they pay full tuition for their employees to attend online. He's getting a degree in Kinesiology. When he took Anatomy, etc, they actually mailed him "parts" to dissect. and for exams, they control his computer, and have eyes on him via the computer c camera. Might be worth checking into. California is so picky, that if it flies here, it'll probably fly anywhere! Best of luck to you!

I was in the same exact position. I took as many classes as I could online through a community college that was in my home of record state so the tuition was cheaper and since it was a brick and mortar school the transcripts do not say its online. They did not offer microbiology or A&P so I did those through clovis community and edukan. Same situation in that they are brick and mortar so the transcripts do not say if its online. All of them were accepted at the school I am at now which is the University of Alaska Anchorage.
I'm glad to hear someone who was in my position is succeeding! It's gives me hope that I won't be in a continuous loop of classes until my husband ETSs!
That's great, just be aware that during the school review at whatever program the OP gets into, they will do a complete review, when I had mine done, I had to sign something attesting that those specific classes had been in person. Again, every school is different.-

Just wanted to share I am taking ALL my pre reqs online through my local university. It's actually the uni where I am hoping to get my ABSN.
The only con is some schools don't take online classes, but most do (at least the ones I am applying for).
It can take a little extra work (I have to watch youtube lectures, because my A&P classes are literally textbook reading assignments, which is impossibly to learn A&P), but it's doable and legit.
You'll be fine!
