Pre-reqs change MCC

U.S.A. Arizona

It seems they changed pre-reqs and there are only 5 classes now. BIO202 and BIO205 are co-reqs now as well as ENG101.

Well there has to be some motivating factor for disturbing the status quo. I have to assume that somewhere there's some financial incentive for somebody - be they administrator or executive. If class size stays the same, they're "affording" extra teachers somehow.

Although I agree, it seems that the nursing instructors, like other teachers, seem underpaid.

What pre-req's do you think should be eliminated? I know I could've done without the pysch (boring), but I've used knowledge from all of them....just curious.

Well, let's see, you can get in with "high school Chem" but if you didn't have that the rest of us have to take a college level Chem. class. I don't agree with that so maybe some sort of basic Chem. class. I also don't agree with the math requirement. I think the math should be more directed at the type of math you use in nursing. Of course these are my areas of concern beacuse I don't well in these things. I had good grades in Eng. Sciences and Psych. Im sure there is plenty to learn from all the pre-req's. I guess I just wish it was a little easier to get in and through nursing school. The amount of people droppping out is alarming to me.....

As I stated in a previous post, I honestly think that the motive behind the changes is to get people on the list faster, and give them classes to take while they are waiting the 3 semester wait. There isn't a smart advisor out there with will tell a student to take the co-reqs while in nursing school. They should have set it up so that you couldn't get placed until you have all the pre-reqs done but could apply with certain ones done, like ASU does.

Why, yes I do in fact. :) But I'll be a good girl and won't tell. Here's an example from days past. Let's just say I totally agreed with my 205 instructor when she said she wanted to smack most of the people in her class upside the head with a 2x4 because they didn't answer questions, didn't "get it", and just sat like bumps on a log! :)

My break was good. Studied some, went out of town, ate a bunch of junk food. You?

gf went home for the holidays so i picked up alot of extra shifts and studied alot...went over stuff we've already done as well as read ahead; i'm definately ready to head back to school

I think this won't help the influx of unqualified nurses. It does help folks like me who are a little older and have been through school before and are more aware of the demands required.

But I'll be competing with guys and girls right out of high school who will freak out at a 4+ hour nursing science class :nono:

I would like to see what administrative changes caused these changes. If instructors and teachers are short and classes are full, it seems reasonable to assume that there may be more money available by the district now.

I wouldn't mind more pre-reqs if they were required, I just don't want any wait time between the time I finish my pre-reqs and the time I start nursing school. Perhaps a better provisionary application system may be better?

I see both your points on how a person could get pre-req's out of the way while being on the wait list (a smart idea) and how it helps older students who have been through school before (don't want to drag out another education more than you have to...I felt the same way). You might not have too many younger students in your program though. Some of the people in my program (myself included) already have bachelor's degrees and all but maybe 5 range in age from late 20's to late 30's, many as a second career. It was the same for my sister who was in nursing school 2 years ago. She was only 21 and the youngest in the class! I also heard that the median age of nurses is 45 or something like that. Interesting.:roll

Good points. I agree with you on the math, I'm not sure I'll ever use algebra (yuck) in nursing!! :D

I would say CHM130 is harder than Math. I did take MAT142 (which is honestly easier than MAT120) at Rio Salado as well. Math only required me to take a test every other week. CHM130 requires a lab report every week, and an online or written quiz every week.

I don't know if you could combine all three with working full-time. I am taking those three classes together right now (BIO201 instead of 202), but I work part time (2 days a week). I guess if you spend pretty much all your free time on studying it is possible! Good luck!!

Did you have to go on campus for any of the tests?

You don't have to go a testing center for your tests but for pretty much all classes you have to go to a testing center for your midterm and final. Here's a list with all their testing centers.

I just finished BIO201 and CHM130, both with B's - I'm so happy I'm finally getting a break! Jeeeuuuj!

Thanks!! However, it still feels like I haven't realized it's over, haha! I'm STILL stressed out! :D I can't remember what not taking 10 credits feels like, lol! I'm sure I'll get used to it very, very soon! :)

I CANT IMAGINE taking anything as a co-req with actually going to Nursing school. The nursing classes are so time consuming, you dont have time for anything else! If you get wait-listed- Please continue to take what ever classes you need so you can get them out of the way.. My nursing classes take up ALL my time and thats just process, pharm and clinicals.. And BIO 205 and the others can still be very time consuming! DO as much as you can BEFORE you get to school...Remember 75% is failing in Nursing school- There is NO SLACKING or short cuts... GOOD LUCK!!
