I am a pre-nursing student and I was just curious as to which pre-req courses have been the most valuable to you as a nursing student... other than anatomy and physiology (which of course are valuable ) and of course english classes for all the writing that you do.
Micro is pretty important imo. My school also requires for us to take Intro to General, Organic & Biochemistry I & II + labs but I've always heard from other nurses (and even my boyfriend's sister's husband, who is a nurse in the USAF) telling me that the GOBC class I'm taking is pretty much useless in terms of nursing. Some schools also require Medical Terminology as a pre-req and I find that to be valuable as well.
Physiology is very very important. When I wrote many of my care plans for critical care (on sepsis, resp failure, etc) I found myself referencing my phys book each time. It really helped break down to the cellular level why things were happening with my patients, why the labs were off, etc. Yeah A+P and micro are very important to have a good background/foundation on. Chemistry, not so much. Also, classes in oral communication and critical thinking have been necessary for patient communication, studying, formulating care plans, etc.
Well, if you can't say anatomy or physio I would have to say Micro...I took medical mico and I LOVED IT! If I was good at chem (I took inorganic, organic and bio and got an A but it was hard as heck and I had a tutor and would not want to take another class) I could easily see myself going into microbiology instead...

Micro, for sure! I learned soooooo much! It explains how antibiotics work, how they figure out what antibiotics work for which bacteria, how viruses work, how it is determined what the actual bacteria is that causes the infection, and so much more. I loved it and thought that the information was invaluable.
