Pre-req before A & P

Published

Did any of you take an intro to Allied Health or General Biology prior to Anatomy and Physiology? I got into A & P with only taking College Chem and HS Biology and am nervous wondering if I should drop it and take General Biology first. I am in AZ. Thanks :)

No I did not. You will not need any pre-req for A&P unless your school requires it. I did well in A&P. All A&P is a lot of studying. A lot of it is memorization such as bones, muscles, planes of the body etc. Dont waste time and money taking classes you will not need. You will do just fine in A&P.

I think you should be fine. We had a cell biology for health professionals class before our A&P and the instructors had made their own text book that melded a little cell biology and chemistry in with some very basic anatomy and physiology. This got the students up to speed who hadn't taken classes in chemistry or biology in high school. I took chemistry in HS about 30 years ago and found that I only needed to understand chemical bonds, pH, some simple chemical equations. For biology, understanding the parts of the cell and how they work and how DNA is replicated.

High school biology will be enough at most schools. If a particular school designs their program to need more biology than that, they will say so in either the prereqs needed for that class or in the class description. Same for if a particular school seperates out part of the standard A&P material as it seems JROregon's school has done. It is more common to get parts of the cell, cell function and DNA replication within the A&P classes.

If you are still worried, you can check with an advisor.

I personally think A&P was easier than general biology. I took general years ago as an undergrad and did horribly whereas I aced A&P. Labs were a lot more fun and the material was not as abstract. Besides, my school did not require a prereq for A&P either.

I took medical terminology before A&P and it helped ALOT! if your school offers it i would highly recommend it. I recommend it to all pre-nursing students i come in contact with!!
