I took the Medical Physiology Online course from UNE. It was pretty tough, but the teachers are really good. Every exam is proctored. Check with the program that you are applying to and make sure they will accept the online class. I had one school that accepted it, but one that didn't because they require the lab portion of the class to actually be in the classroom with a professor.

is there another school that you recommend? I like how une is flexible because I technically need to take the class now to be able to apply by feb how hard was it? how are the exams like.

The flexibility of UNE is very nice. Is there a community college in your area that offers Micro. in a mini-mester course? The class I took through UNE was pretty time consuming. There are 4 exams (the 4th exam is not comprehensive) with 61 multiple choice questions and 3 T/F questions on each exam. In my class, each exam covered 3-6 chapters each, and some chapters were pretty long. There are online powerpoint lectures for each chapter. The exams are proctored, meaning you log in to a website (ProctorU) and a proctor will watch you on a camera while you take your exam. The exams are timed, I don't remember how long, but it was plenty of time for me. You definitely need to know the material for the exams. I would think Micro. would be a little bit easier than Physiology, but who knows. If you're not working and not taking other classes then you should be able to do it. It took me about 6 months to finish, but I was working full-time and was taking Micro. at a community college as well. I ended up with a B+ for the Medical Physiology Online course.

Hi Lbaum,

I want to sign up for the UNE physiology course, but before I sign-up I want to make sure I prepare myself. I have heard it is time-consuming and a difficult course but I've found very little information about the course review and format from someone who personally took the course.

So any other details about your course experience would be helpful especially regarding the course acceptance at nursing schools you have applied too or are looking to apply too or schools that definitely don't accept it? I contacted two nursing schools who said they would take it and there are two who said they won't take online labs.

1. Do the professors provide any pre-tests or study guide for the exams? If so, are they similar regarding the test format and questions?

2. I'm re-taking the course for a better grade, 7 years later so I really need to get an "A". Are you able to see what questions you got wrong after the exam?

3. I read on the syllabus that you only get points for the exams and labs so are the lab post-quizzes graded or do you just get points for completion? Was the lab portion easy to navigate and understand? Also, do you get more than one attempt to do the lab quiz?

4. I also work full-time and wanted to know if did you do a lot of self-teaching from the book or do the lectures and professors cover everything you need to know and the book is just a supplement? Any helpful study tips or resources you used to do well in the course?

5. Also, how did the course show up on your transcript to schools?

Because I'm thinking about taking Chemistry online, I've read about UNE online classes on several forums, and supposedly overall it is fairly difficult, but most people I've read about are getting A or B grades in the class. The difficulty is most likely in having to be disciplined enough to really dig in and spend quality time studying without the structure of an in person class which is hard for me and most other people.

Hi sks610, sorry for the delayed reply!

To answer your questions....

1. The professors do provide a list of topics you need to know for each chapter, as well as online multiple choice quizzes for each chapter (that you can take as many times as you want to)

2. I did the exact same thing. I took Physiology first in 2007 or 2008 (I think) and wanted to re-take it to improve my grade. You are not able to see which questions you get wrong on the exams, but you are able to see what questions you get wrong on the chapter quizzes. There is no comprehensive final exam, so you won't really need to go back and study the previous exams.

3. The lab grades are basically completion grades. There are lab pre- and post-quizzes, but no matter what score you get, they will give you the full points for completing the lab. The labs are online and very easy to understand. Although, I will say that I paid attention during the labs, read the info. at the beginning, and made at least 8 out of 10 on all of the post-quizzes for all of the labs. (But they really aren't that difficult). You can kind of get more than one attempt for the quizzes...if you go through and answer questions 1-9, and then click "re-start quiz" it will let you go back to the beginning and re-anwer the questions you got wrong at first.

4. There definitely is some self-teaching involved. But the instructors do provide very detailed power points that will cover 90% of what will be on the exams. The biggest thing is listening to the power points, completing all of the terms and topics that they expect you to know (from the sheet that they provide you with for each chapter), and understanding those concepts. You will really need to understand the concepts of the topics and not just memorize facts.

5. The course showed up just like any other course that I took. The course name was "DPPP-370 Medical Physiology" and showed my grade of B+ next to it.

This is definitely a difficult course, but you can do well if you work hard and spend an appropriate amount of time studying for the exams. I believe I spent 3-4 hours per night (Monday - Thursday) studying and watching power points and taking notes after I got home from work. I would spend all day Saturday and 1/2 the day Sunday studying before I took an exam. It is very nice to be able to schedule your exams whenever works best for you. I really enjoyed the course and learned A LOT.

The only down side to this course is that some schools won't accept an online lab. However, some schools will. I checked with the nursing programs I was applying to to see if they would accept this course before I even signed up. One would, and one wouldn't - because of the online lab. They might accept the lecture grade though if you have already taken the course with an in-person lab before, and are just repeating the course for a better grade. For example, when I first took Physiology at UH-CL, I got a B in Physiology Lab, but a C in Physiology Lecture, so one of the schools I applied to agreed to take the new lecture grade (from UNE), but not the new lab grade. It really just depends on the schools you are applying to.

Thank you so much for the long post and advice, it is helpful to know what you are getting into beforehand, so I feel a little better about signing up for it now :)

Are you applying to schools right now or are you already in nursing school? Would you be able to tell me which school did accept and which would not accept the online course and or/lab? Unfortunately, my undergrad university had a combined lab and lecture so I don't have a separate grade for it.

Yes, I am applying to nursing schools right now. As of now I've applied to UT-H (downtown) and UH Victoria (the Sugar Land campus). UHV does accept online labs, but UT-H does not. I'm not sure about the other programs in the area. Sorry I wasn't more help! Which schools are you applying to? BSN programs?
