Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I'm working on my pre-requisites for a nursing program and I'm wondering whether anyone can give me some feedback on GPA. I think mine is about a 3.3, (I haven't seen my transcripts in a few years), but I have both a BS and Masters degree in Molecular and Cell Biology. I'm certainly not knocking anyone that has a degree in a more liberal arts field, but do you know whether there's any weighting given to a science advanced degree student even if the GPA is not quite as high as other applicants? Thanks.

I don't know, but I think it would depend on the place and their admissions procedures they have in place. For example, some places really consider the whole picture whereas some only consider the GPA. One school I know of in particular just told me that they only go by your GPA of your pre-reqs, so non-pre-reqs aren't even included in that.

I would think, though, that you should have a pretty good chance at getting in somewhere with degrees like what you have. Ultimately they are trying to figure out who would be able to complete the program, and you've shown a high scientific aptitude and ability to do well through difficult coursework.

Whats your nursing pre-req GPA? Because a lot of schools over here care about that more than your overall GPA. I don't really think having a BS in another science will be helpful for your admission, but the pre-reqs should be cake for you.

Having a science or liberal arts degree doesn't really make a difference. The only difference is that a science degree applicant has probably knocked out a few pre-reqs where a liberal arts one hadn't. Some schools only look at nursing pre-req gpa, some schools look at both but seperately and some look at the gpa as a whole along with something like an entrance exam.

Thanks! I know that one school I'm looking into it's 25% TEAs test, 25% A&P I grade and 50% GPA. As I said, I'm not trying to knock those with other majors, but most of my non-science courses were 4.0, whereas my science courses were in the 3.0-3.3 range. Just wondering whether anyone else had a similar background and whether that helped. Thank you all and good luck to you in your careers.

I understand completely, I've got a 4.0 in all of my non-science courses too. Unfortunately my school looks at it overall and doesn't seperate them. So with the science courses it brings my gpa down to a 3.5. But I'm greatful for that in a way since my science gpa is about a 3.0. It's funny because my science grades were always the last ones to come in, so when I checked my grades it would always say 4.0 for about a day or two until the bio and chem grades came rolling in.
