Edukan or Iowa Community Colleges online for science pre-req's?

Hello!

I'd like to hear some recent feedback on these two particular colleges, so I can hopefully make the best choice for taking the rest of my science pre-reqs online! These seemed to have the best "reviews." I am going to take A & P II and Chemistry in the fall. I took classes at CCConline but they were VERY expensive. Edukan and the Iowa Community Colleges Online Consortium seem to be a better cost and have a better system from what I can tell.

Has anyone had positive or negative recent experiences with these two classes? I am due with my second child August 13th and I work full time, so taking the classes at my local CC are out of the question and I want to get my application in for the Fall 2012 semester at the two schools I am looking at.

I know this is a topic discussed frequently, but a lot of the postings are older and I didn't see any that compared these two specifically - any help would be much appreciated and hopefully will be helpful for other folks this fall.

I don't really know about Iowa CC, but I've done a number of Edukan classes, as well as A&P I and A&P II with labs and I've really liked them both. They're usually on the fast side, but I honestly like the accellerated courses because it's almost like ripping off a bandaid, it hurts less when it's fast.

I've done really well in all three classes I've taken through them, I'm still in the second portion of A&P, but I had an A in the first section as well as my developmental psych class I took last fall. The classes aren't necessarily easy, but I really felt that they did a good job incorporating the labs online, I felt like I learned a lot even without being in class.

My only complaint about Edukan was really more of a teacher thing. In my A&P class I kinda felt like my teacher gave us a lot of busy work. I don't mind doing homework, but I would prefer it be learning instead of typing up massive workbook pages word for word which could have easily been provided as a template as in my other section of A&P. That instructor too was not the best communicator as well, and took a while to respond and send out the proctored exam, which was a pain. But overall, I really enjoyed doing the classes and if I had more courses that needed to be taken that I could do through them I would.

Jessica -

Did you check with the school you will be apply to be sure that these courses transfer? How did that process go?

Are all the exams proctored? What is that process like - do you have to go to a local school to get that done, and does it cost anything to get the exams proctored?

Oh could you share on here or via PM who you instruct is that you mentioned in your post?

Thanks!

I didn't check about transferability because you do the course itself through a community college (Pratt CC was who I used) and I've had no problems, all mine so far transferred to my school, JCCC (which has a fairly strict transfer policy).

The exams are proctored, I know some teachers aren't doing proctored anymore because they started using a new authentication software, but mine still does. It's really not very hard, you fill out a paper at the start of the class on where you will do it, send it to the professor, and then he sends the tests to the proctor. I usually go to a local college and do it in their testing center because it's just easier.

I'll PM you with a name, I don't like to name names on websites :-)

I took classes from Edukan including micro. nothing but goo things. all my classes used the NEW authentication program except for english..I still had to have that proctored. I had a 4.0 at the end of the semester and it wasnt because the classes were easy..they were 8 weeks long and intense..really have to buckle down.

no problem with them transferring because with Edukan you PICK one of the 6 colleges as your "home college" which means when your transcripts are sent they come from THAT college and are not listed as online thru edukan..they will say for example Pratt CC and THEIR code for THEIR microbiology class.

Thanks for the help!

Is there a particular college among the 6 that would be best to pick?

I will have to get in touch with the schools I have in mind to be sure these classes transfer over.

I don't think it matters very much, I guess it might matter if one CC makes you take say A&P for Micro pre-req and another doesn't, but I used Pratt and haven't had any problems.
