Pre nursing student 2021/ 2022 - UFV Question

World Canada CA Programs

Published

Hi all!

Pre nursing student here, looking for some advice and hoping to connect with others in the same boat.

About me: late twenties, have been out of school for 10 years and doing a career change. I have been doing my prerequisites since Feb 2021 and am hoping to meet the Aug 1/21 deadline this year.

Stumbled upon this form after searching for application advice online. After looking for a few days I have realized that I will likely need to reapply with higher grades. (currently will finish with 2 low A's and 2 B's)

Wondering where others have done/ are doing their prerequisites?

For any one who has also reapplied, were you able to utilize the same reference letters?

Any other tips or advice much appreciated!

Good to everyone applying ?

Hey!

I'm a late twenty year old also attempting to get into UFV's nursing program!

I'm currently working on my pre req's. I have a high A in English and a high A in Anatomy/Physiology (as long as I don't tank my grade while I finish the course). Still need to complete Chem and Math. I'm not planning to apply for August, just taking my time so I don't get denied because I know that'll devestate me ?.

I currently hold a leadership position at my job as well. Apparently that counts as a point.

Have you done any volunteer work? I'm scrambling to find something relevant with covid.

Hey!
I am in my early 30’s and have been out of school for 10 years as well and have been upgrading to apply for the nursing program at UFV.
I have been upgrading since Fall 2020 and have completed Chem, Bio, English and currently completing Math at UFV. Although I have nothing else to compare it to I have had a good experience there, even through Covid and limited resources through online learning.
I too am applying for my Aug 1st and am hoping to complete all my volunteer hours by then.
I believe you are allowed to utilize the same references but would confirm that with an advisor at the university just to be sure.
Good luck with everything and I hope you are able to find what you need here with moving forward into Nursing!

It's so great knowing there's a few "older" people applying! I should've stuck with Chem and Math through UFV!! I was considering it this Spring but I decided to wait out covid because I was apprehensive doing online learning in my weaker subjects (if only I knew how long this would linger on ??.) I'm just going to stick to Abby Virtual now seeing as it seems to work for me.

Do you have a specific area of nursing your interested in? I'm curious if they want students to have some form of direction they intend to go or if they think it's beneficial to be open-minded. ?

Hi there. I am just looking at applying as well in the future and I am also in my 30's looking for a career change. I am curious if you guys are retaking courses due to the amount of time that has lapsed or if it is your first time taking the eng/bio/math/chem needed to get in. Cheers

I was hesitant at first doing the courses online but have had a great experience so far and believe it's all thanks to the teachers I've had and how they have adapted to online learning. I do have a specific area of nursing I'm interested in but also am leaving the opportunities open as I'm sure along the way my interests may change. I do not believe UFV requires you to have a direction in mind before starting but just an overall passion and drive to complete the program.

When are you hoping to apply for? Which intake program? :)

So nice to see others in their 30's looking for a career change or just the start of a big change into a career.

It really depends on the university you apply to and what their requirements are for the program. UFV requires a lot of the prerequisites to be completed a minimum of five years before entering the program. Having last been in school over ten years ago I needed to upgrade all of the prereq's for the course. I did take English, Biology, Chemistry and Math in high school but definitely needed to take a refresher on those. As tedious as those courses were I'm thankful to have taken them this past year as I feel better prepared for more of the upper level university courses within the program now.

That's good to know. Gotta say there isn't much support through Abby Virtual but I don't mind, it helps keep me disciplined and self reliant.

I'm aiming for the September 2022 intake. Originally I wanted to get a degree in psychiatric nursing but all the programs I was interested in shut down/I'm not interested in doing any nursing through KWU (too many horror stories). So I figured do the BSN through UFV and specialize in mental health. But now that I've been researching the profession for a few years I've found my interests have grown, so I feel more open minded.

What about you? What intake are you aiming for?

Oop, I see you mentioned it above!! Good luck for the August intake! Honestly from what the advisor said to me I don't think many older applicants have a hard time getting in due to advanced interview skills and life experience.

Yes, you're right! August 1st is the deadline for the January 2022 intake. Originally I had planned to apply for the September 2022 intake but was told by my advisor that I should apply already as it is a high probability of not making it the first round. So now I'm working really hard to complete my volunteer hours as I was anticipating another 4-5 months of completing them but now have less than a month.

I have also heard that the January intake has quite a few high school applicants and with the life experience we may have a higher chance of being chosen. Obviously with regards to our points in each category.

Never really considered that, but it makes sense. I thought it would be a more "seamless" transition starting in September since I have kids who will be returning to school at the same time.

In the end, it's not the end of the world if people don't get accepted the first time. But damn, do I want to get in sooner than later. ?

Oh 100% agree! That seamless start in September could not ring more true! I have kids as well and there’s just something about everyone going back to school at the same time that just fits.

The possibility of not making it the first round can definitely be discouraging only because you work so hard to complete everything (and dependant on which round you make it to) it’s a long process. I’m with you on with wanting to get in sooner rather than later for sure! We’ll just keep pushing forward!

One question I have for you (that I haven’t found much information or ways on) is when adding work experience and if you have or are a SAHM will you be adding it to your application and how to really explain in minimal space the depth of what actually is all involved there. Especially if the past 10 years (for me) have been just that.
