Pre-nursing Student: Lost of intrest or Feeling burned Out?

Published

I am currently a 2nd year pre-nursing student and I feel as if I no longer want to continue on with this major. I feel as if I am forcing myself to enjoy every aspect of this journey when I don't. Sometimes I feel like I was only going strong or felt motivated to proceed with this major b/c I didn't want to disappoint others. I enjoy learning and my grades are great, but toward my 2nd year, 2nd semester, I no longer felt motivated to do my absolute best and I started thinking about other majors. I don't want to upset my mother or disappoint others by changing my major (especially my mother, she always calls me "lazy" or "assumes I give up easy", if she hears that I want to change major) I don't feel lazy ,but I just no longer have that motivation. Is this just me feeling burned out or should I completely come to a halt and reconsider?

Your in pre-nursing with good grades which means that you are also prepared/preparing for other majors with similar requirements. There is nothing wrong with taking a break to take stock of where you are. Nursing, while it has many rewards is also tedious, backbreaking and miserable for some people who are just not cut out for it. No shame in finding that out before you are thousands of dollars in school debt in career your not even sure you like.

Life is a journey and sometimes the road has twists and turns. Don't let what other people think control your actions/decisions. Talk to people whose opinions matter, or to a spiritual advisor if you are a person of faith. Mostly find your passion and follow it.

Exactly. Overall, the preparatory curriculum would apply to other majors as well, so a trip to the college career center would be a good idea.

Hello! I feel this way sometimes. I get cold feet and start doubting if I can do it. I suggest you take a semester off and volunteer at a couple of hospitals. See if it’s for you! Not only would that help you get in your school of choice, but you may re-gain motivation.

Frankly? I think this is a common feeling, especially for students who 'grasp' the material very easily. I know for me, there are days (and weeks) where I'm like "My grades are great so what's the point of sitting through a lecture I already know?" Doing the work properly means that lectures are more for asking questions, imo, than for listening (I read the chapters and do all the practice activities and so on before lecture). This means that the school part is super boring. Do you have any skills classes yet? We have to do one as our final prerequisite and honestly, it's remotivated me pretty well. It's different than memorizing books and it's reminded me why I want to do this.

Good luck, whatever you decide.
