Pre-Nursing and Recreational Therapy

Published

Hi Everyone,

I need help choosing a right currier. In this coming semester fall 2012, i am starting Recreational Therapy program. Does anyone know if this is a really good program or not? After completing that I am thinking about to do ASBSN through CSU. If I have one BSC degree is it a good idea to go for medical school or should I complete ASBSN program?

Hi there;

I am a 1997 survivor of a TBI (traumatic brain injury) I had received my BS degree in 1986 in PR-Ad/ Mass Communications, with technological changes and TBI I felt unqualified to seek employment after rehabilitation, so returned to my Alma-Mater and sought a Degree in Leisure Services with emphasis in Rec. therapy. I also became an LMT a CNA and an aromatherapist. So, I now hold two BS degrees and two Dept. of Health licenses but cannot find suitable sustainable employment

Since there is little to no reimbursement from insurance companies for recreation therapy with the exception of a few pediatric cases, many facilities have eliminated therapeutic recreation specialists and replaced them with non-degrees activity assistants for lower cost. Anyone I went to school with that earned their CTRS (certified therapeutic recreation specialist) has since left the field and switch directions or went into commercial recreation, special events planning and promotion, sports management or events management. My alma mater eliminated the only accredited therapeutic recreation baccalaureate program in the state and moved the recreation & leisure studies/commercially recreation & sports management to the college of business' management & marketing dept.

Nursing and medicine overlap but they are two different approaches and theoretical models. You don't need a BSN or ABSN to get into a PA program or medical school.

hi,

thanks the comment. yea i really want to do nursing, but i just can't get intothe program and my advisor told me to go for this, recreational, program andmay be after graduating i can go for medical school. do you think it’s a rightchoice?

Rec therapy is not a heavy science major. If you want to go to med school check out the admissions requirements for some schools you might be interested in. Most require calculus, biology, organic chemistry, physics, high GPA and competitive MCAT scores.

There is some overlap with nursing as many TR programs require sociology, A&P, developmental psych, and statistics. Nursing also requires nutrition and microbiology, sometimes chemistry.

You need to decide what you want to do and set up a plan towards your goal whether it be nursing or medical school. Years ago I thought I wanted to be a physician (among other career options), ultimately I ended up pursuing nursing and (so far) have no regrets. The TR courses I completed help me now as a pediatric nurse for medically fragile children as I took several recreation for special populations courses and developed quite a resource & referral library that I still use today. (I did not complete my recreation degree due to unforeseen circumstances)

I'm a little confused. Nursing and medical school re completely different. If you think you want to be one a doctor then I wouldn't waste my time majoring in rec. therapy (I'm not quite sure what that is) I would focus on all the required science classes making sure to get the highest grade possible. Medical school can be tough to get into. Many of my family members are doctors so I've seen what they had to go through.

Good luck.

yea i amconfused too, it seems like i am trapped. i have completed all the prerequisiteswith a's and b's, but can't get into the program because it’s too comparative.i am so close to graduate from the university, but i don't have a major. one ofmy advisors suggested me to go for this program and graduate from the uni. doyou think i can apply for medical school after graduating from university with bachelorsalong with completing the physics, biology and chemistry? the whole thing isthat i want to go for higher education, but i just don't know from where tostart.

Do you want to be a nurse or a physician? Start there

You start before you graduate, .you need to take the MCAT (medical college admissions test), ensure you have all the required courses and grades. I know there are a few medical student online forums. Google the schools you are interested in and find out admission criteria and minimum requirements, application deadlines, minimum MCAT scores, types of recommendations needed. It's a highly competitive and expensive process.

Good luck in your educational endeavors.
