good evening to all,
i have been lurking on allnurses for a few months researching and reading through the various articles and discussion topics. i have to give it up to this community for providing an astounding amount of information, i have much gratitude for all of you contributing members! i feel like i can come here when i have questions and research, i always find some great first hand information.
that being said i am currently facing somewhat of a dilemma, i decided after many years of deliberating that i want to become a registerd nurse. i've always felt drawn to this profession but i never felt focused in school as a youth. i knew i wanted to explore and live waiting until i had a solid grip on myself before settling down to pursue an education. i felt some anxiety about going back to school but over the last few months i started the ball rolling to just go, and do it! i am so focused on making this adventure successful, i am set on succeeding and working in a profession where i can be a contribution for people who need to be cared for, overall i want to make a positive difference in the world around me and the people in my community. so far i am working on the process of becoming a volunteer at a long term care facility in my neighborhood so i can be in a comparitive environment for when i do get through my 5 years of schooling. i'm excited at the potential of this path for me.
i've met with academic advisers and i've already applied to two colleges for the general art & science pre-nursing programs. these programs are essentially 1 year university preparatory certificate programs, if you maintain a b average in some cases you are guaranteed a seat in the bsc-nursing collaborative degree program between the college and university. i feel confident in my first choice which is algonquin college in ottawa, my second choice is also highly competitive with more rigid admission requirements, st. lawrence in kingston but they perfer a chemistry at © or (u) level and although i have biology i'm lacking the chem so i'm almost positive they would over look me.
so far i have found st. clair, lambton, & northern college in ontario which i could apply to, but i'm wondering if anyone here has been through this program pre-health sciences - nursing at a college in ontario. what you may have thought of your school, if there are others i should check out that i have not listed, i'm willing to try anything to maximize my application through ocas and get into a program that will get me on the road to becoming a nursing student. i need one more college for pre-nursing prep for bsc. nursing! help! :heartbeat
I actually applied at Niagara College and Mohawk College. But they are also highly competitive.
I want to do the BScN collaborative degree at Brock! I know it's your last choice, but it's my first. I live around the area. Good luck! Did you send in your marks from highschool? Or mature student application?
I read that in competive programs they do the "mark differential" and I believe that's where they will add 10 marks onto your mark if you did the university/college course. So I believe that it's ... 72% would be a 82%. Not really sure though, have you heard this?
i went to high school on the east coast and we did not have oac so mark differential does not apply to me although i have heard about it. i did apply with my high school marks and sophomore year i had english, math, & biology and senior year i had math & english.
i should also say that loyalist/brock is only my last choice because of distance, that and i do not know anyone in belleville or st. catherines!! ideally i'd like to get into algonquin pre-nursing, then apply for the collaborative degree with ottawau as well as apply directly for the bscn @ upei which is where i am from. i'd love to return home to spend some time with my family and what better excuse then to study!
&...
when i returned home today i had mail! an information packet from my 2nd choice; st. lawrence college. inside was also an offer of admission!! yay! 2 for 3! they have pre-health science pre-bscn and i didn't have any chemistry which is why i didn't think i would get accepted. phew, now we wait for word on the highly competitive programs!
I got into Niagara College. Which is what I wanted anyways. I don't know that I would have gone to mohawk, other than the relationship with McMaster that they have. I called them and they said either today I would know or the 18th, so I'm glad I found out sooner rather than later.
So you have heard from Algonquin? Will you go to St. Lawrence or Loyalist, if you don't happen to get into Algonquin? I'm sure you will though if you go into those other programs.
Pre-Nursing is highly competitive. I wouldn't be surprised if it took the month to get back to you.
if i don't get into algonquin then it'll be st. lawrence. it's a better curriculum then loyalist, closer to the boyfriend and kingston is a beautiful city! plus i know someone who went through the practical nursing program at another campus but still had good things to say about the administration.
algonquin already sent a notice saying that offers of admission for the pre-nursing program wouldn't be out until after march 5th. the school actually called me to verify my address so they could mail me that notice so i know i just have to be patient and hope for the best! i'd love to see it friday but more then likely i won't see it till next monday.
