Pre Nursing Mom, wife working full time.

Hey guys,

First off I need to change my username. I know it says future RN but I dont know if that is allowed??? Im not sure.

I know this question has been asked before but I just wanted my own thread, with my own situation.

I am a mother of 3 (9, 4, 6month old). I am taking pre reqs right now hopefully to enter nursing school by Fall 2019.

I just finished my CNA class yay!! I am wanting to become an RN the school I am looking into provides the ADN program.

I make 55,000 a year now, I am just not happy where I am. I feel like nursing is my calling.

I did the CNA classes so that I can get a feel for the nursing enviroment, and possibly work as a cna on weekends while in nursing school.

Is this just wishful thinking. Is it possible to have 3 kids, work part time, and nursing school.

I have lots of family, and husband for support. I have a little money save--hopefully school loans and grants, and tax refund can help out as well.

I am pretty organized, and I love planning. Do you think nursing school is possible for me.

So encouraging ladies thank you!

If I had 3 kids I would never have gone to nursing school because I think it would have been unmanageable for me, but that is me. Several of my classmates had children, worked part time and still passed nursing school. It's all in your motivation and how hard you are willing to work for it. I had no children and worked 8-16 hours per week and barely managed a 3.00 GPA, but again that's just me. If you really want it, it will work out.

YES! It's doable. Single mom of 3 right here (6, 4, 2.) It's the hardest thing I've ever done in my life and I was a single mom in the Army before this (active duty.)

My biggest hurdle was getting over the feeling of guilt when repeatedly having to ask for help from my mom to watch my kids so that I could study even if I wasn't in class.

My first program (BSN program) was impossible for me. I went through half the program just to withdraw. It was a hectic schedule, 5 days a week, 8-5, 1-2 clinical shifts (12 hrs each) per week on top of the full day classes. I was commuting an hour each way and I couldn't handle it. I withdrew and found a closer ADN program that I'm succeeding in. It's half the time in class compared to the previous program which means more study time and that I could still have my kids in soccer and baseball.

If you want it bad enough, anything is possible. I have zero option to fail and that remains my mentality. Best wishes!!

My kids are older than yours, but I have 5 of them. The youngest is six and the older kids are pretty self sufficient, which helps, but it is still crazy. I had to give up my 4.0 GPA and settle for a few B's along the way, but it was worth it to make sure I have time for the family while in school full-time and working part-time. It is certainly doable, especially with supportive family.

Very encouraging thank you!

So just an update guys I am currently in microbiology, I aced my 1st exam. After this class I will take physiology in the summer, and that is it for my pre req requirements.

I did want to take a mental break, and save some more money for my household so I plan to start nursing school in January 2020. i switched schools also. the school i am in offers night time nursing school, and they offer the option of doing your lecture online (you can sit in for other lectures if you want), and come in for lab, and clinical I am really hoping, and praying I get accepted into that program (online), and like i said if so i will start next January!! wish me luck!!

Also a side note I hate dealing with financial aid, so I am paying for the nursing school part, which is like 5000, with classes, uniform, books. ect. maybe less.

i also plan on saving at least 6 months + mortgage, and I also have my rainy day fund. just in case for some reason I am unable to get into the online program, and get accepted into traditional day.

online would be ideal, because I could stay at my current job, but I will take what I can get.

  • Did you get accepted into a nursing program? Yes, I'm a mom of 3 and I will graduate with my BSN the day before I turn 40. I worked part-time as a substitute teacher as well. It has been a very long and challenging journey but I am so happy that my dream will be coming true very soon! Good luck, it can be done!
