Pre- NP program floor experience

Hello all!

i am a fairly new nurse with 2 years experience working cardiac step down. Although i feel like ive learned a ton, i realize that there is a TON left to learn as well. Im now in the middle of a job change and i need some input into a few decisions i need to make. The end of the year has been a pretty slow time to hear back for interviews and offers but if my ultimately end up as either a AGNP, ACNP or FNP where would be the best option to work? I have been offered a job working days, no weekends or holidays (dream come true right?) but its in GI surgery (pretty much endo-EGDs, GIB, colonoscopy, ERCP etc)...basically working prep, procedure, recovery, giving conscious sedation and monitoring patients throughout. It does require ACLS, but does not seem as acute as working the floor. I also have scheduled interviews for a level 1 trauma ER (nights) and a MPCU (nights). My thoughts are that if i want ACNP, i need ER or ICU experience, but i want some others input. Would working in endo be taking me down the wrong path i need to be on to apply to NP school? thanks!

    I think working in an outpatient surgery type (endo) setting would be good prep for school as far as general medicine, learning about anesthesia, etc. BUT...i also work in an outpatient setting, working 8-5 daily and after almost 20 years in that position i am likely going to leave to make my NP training happen.

    NP students come from SO many different backgrounds, and although some areas give you better preparation than others, I am not convinced that any ONE area gives you the PERFECT prep! there are students in my program from health departments, MSDS, case management, office nursing, etc. We ALL have something to contribute...

    just keep in mind that MOST NP clinical happens during the week, so if you are given some flexibility in your schedule it would be great for you! If, like me, there is little flexibility, it will probably be pretty difficult to get your clinical hours done with that type of work schedule. good luck in your decision!

    I'm in a NP program right now, and I agree with Birkiegirl. Your experience on a step down unit will be so valuable to you as you embark on your journey to become a NP. I think the only exception would be those that work in OB or the OR... Well, um, yeah... they will likely have a much steeper learning curve. Depending on which NP program you want to pursue, you might consider getting a job in a similar area. For example, if you are going to do the acute care NP, the ED or MPCU would be good choices. For the FNP and/or adult/geriatric program, I think you already have the experience you need to get started.
