pre-employment physical

Published

if I have a pre-employment physical do I have to state , if it asks for previous medical conditions, about a healed broken bone? I have a clearance letter but I am not sure if its necessary to add on there. I don't want them to not hire me because it was 5 months ago. I also don't want to be dishonest should I need medical attention on it down the road and need to request FMLA or whatever. I was already offered the job on a conditional basis should I pass the background, drug test, and physical and this is the only thing I'm worried about.

Probably 50% of applicants have a previous broken bone- you are way overthinking the purpose of a pre-employment physical. Write it down and don't give it another thought.

even if it was only like 5 months ago? @meanmaryjean

Is it considered “healed”? If so and your limb is now at full capacity, then no need to mention it, as it is not a chronic condition. That would be like listing that you had a cold once.

It's far more likely that they won't consider you hireable because you lied on your medical disclosure than because of your previous bone fracture.  More importantly, this is something that can get on the radar of your licensing board.

Why would a healed fracture need additional care down the road?

I disagree. I don't think omitting/not mentioning a past fracture has anything to do with anything, especially the Board. If there are ongoing issues related to it, that's another story.

I don't mention that I had my tonsils out when I was six...

I also don't think the Board would care about a previous bone fracture, however I have known them to take action when a nurse intentionally lies to a potential employer about medical screenings.

I guess I'm getting more to the level of detail needed more than omitting things. Seriously, a childhood tonsillectomy is technically in the same boat as a past fracture (given that there are no ongoing consequences) as part of a PMH, don't you think?

Do you maybe feel that because it was relatively recent that it's more important to include?
