Practice in New York

Published

I am going to graduate from Kennesaw State University in Georgia with a BSN in about a year. My plans for the future involve moving up to New York to find work. I know that New York requires a license to practice at any facility in New York. If I receive a BSN from another state, how would I go about to obtain a license to practice in New York? I read that you need to receive your BSN from a New York institution, but I want to be sure so I can get ready when the time comes.

No. If you have a GA license first you would then apply for a NY license by endorsement. The application process is clearly outlined on the NY BoN website. You do not have to graduate from a NY school to practice nursing in NY. You do not have to have a BSN as there are ADN programs in NY.

I would not recommend moving to NY without a job offer in hand as the competition is significant with hundreds of applicants for a single job at times

Moreover, if you're hoping to move to NY directly after graduation, you don't even need to get your GA license at all. You can apply for a NY license by examination and just take the NCLEX anywhere. But I'd reiterate JustBeachyNurse's second paragraph if you're talking about NYC itself - competition is fierce, especially for new grad jobs.

The upstate portion of New York particularly the Southern Tier/Finger Lakes area is desperate for nurses, new and experienced.
