Pot Smoking and Nursing

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Im angry.

I work for a small clinic in Northern CA. There are three RN's on staff at all time. Recently our Office Manager decided to start drug testing of all staff including Doctors. Well, one of the Nurses I work with came back positive for marijuana use. My thought was "Well she should not be doing it anyways" I was actually glad to see her get in trouble.

After discusing it with the Doctors they came up with a new unwritten policy. They will overlook marijuana. Basiclly, you can smoke all the pot you want but just on the weekends not during "on call" days. I questioned one of the Doctors about it and his response was to "chill"

Does this seem wrong to anybody else? Do Nurses really smoke pot on there days off?

ohhh, one of those....

xtxrn - what an illogical statement. I do not smoke pot, but I think the argument that is dangerous is based on very weak evidence and is made even more ridiculous by the fact that a dangerous drug (alcohol) is perfectly legal. Getting high is getting high. Whether you prefer to have a couple of cocktails or smoke some pot, both methods are done for the same reason. Seriously, do the research yourself. There is plenty of academic literature out there.

OK.....add talking to a drunk to the list. I had a neighbor who was sloshed 4-5 days a week, peeing on himself in the front yard, etc. I didn't have much to do with him either :)

For those who disagree with me, Okee dokee :D

Legalize it. Tax it. Cut drug cartels income by 1/3.

Thanks for a laugh, I totally agree with you. Where do we draw the line? I could also add being Canadian, orange, obese, Morman, a male nurse, etc., etc. to the list. The way 'our' laws stand now we are making criminals out of pot smokers. If we legalize it, we could make a bundle by taxing it, and the criminal element at least for pot would die.

I completely disagree, despite what the research says.

That is truly disturbing.

Long as this is a country where, we make billions of dollars in the drug business, drug cartels from other countries continue to funnel their drugs here they will always have drugs, and drug users, in all walks of life, is it right no....is it everyone no...is it me no....but this country loves money, and the potential for making bunches of it...don't believe turn on CNN on anygiven day. I'm just saying.

I was walking out the door for work the other day when I saw an item on NBC news that talked about one of their polls showing that for the first time ever, 50% of Americans believe pot should be legalized. Now then, if this is correct, would it be because 50% of Americans do pot or because they are fed up with the "drug war"? Another story focused on drug lords using 12 year old kids as their runners. Seems the bosses consider children a renewable resource. One of my in-laws is a sheriff here in Texas and he was telling us that his department doesn't really concentrate on pot anymore unless they just happen to stumble across a big shipment or large scale grower. He did say they take down an average of 12-15 meth labs every month.

Whether you use it or not, want it legalized or not, or have no opinion either way, you really have to admit that what we are doing tain't working. I'm fairly certain some people on this forum have the answer but I know I don't.

But there's a huge difference between someone who has a glass of wine at dinner and a drunk--the same way there's a difference between the casual pot user and an addict. It's basically the same thing in my mind, legalities aside.

But A glass of wine with dinner doesn't impair someone :) Pot stays in the system a LOT longer than a single (or even 2 or more) drinks. ETOH metabolizes fast enough to measure the level in someone's system and see if there is a level of impairment. With pot, it takes days to weeks to months to clear depending on how much/how often it's used. If someone has an ETOH level that shows impairment, I agree with you- it causes immediate impairment.

Look, you have our view- that's fine. I've got mine (and I'm also allowed that). I saw too many folks in drug/alcohol rehab going through detox for pot alone (confirmed by drug testing). It screws people up. I have a family member who smoked regularly (quit several years ago)... I'll just say that his pot use and life aren't something I'm aiming for in my own ... being stoned is being stoned... but pot stays longer.

I had a former co-worker (late 80s) who would drag her cookie tin of pot and the papers/pipe out regularly. I'd leave. I wanted no part of it. I've had joints stuck in my hand at parties- couldn't get rid of it fast enough. I've never smoked the stuff. I have done stupid drinking (and that's exactly what it was - STUPID)....but the I grew up. :)

:) I wouldn't be surprised if more than %50 smoke pot, but answered no to not look like they do :D

My biggest issue with pot is the safety aspect (medical people, transportation, factory work w/machines, etc).

The situation in TX has been horrible, especially along the border, for decades. Even when I lived in the Hill Country (17 years), it was never something new to hear that some rancher had been killed by drug runners using his land for a drug highway. :(

And, for the small time users, I'd have to agree that all of the legal rigamarole is taking away from more violent crimes. I'd rather see rehab for the folks not selling, up to some agreed upon weight of pot in their possession. Using a prison cell for someone who has not committed violent crimes is something that bugs me- again , not sure what the answer is :o

If there was a way to get the stuff cleared out of the system at the same speed as booze, a lot of my concerns wouldn't exist :) Until then, I don't want potheads taking care of me or my family ..... my right

For those who want to smoke- great..... just stay away from me, and we can both be happy :D Clear it out of your system? C'mon over and watch a movie with me  (I don't believe that someone who smokes casually is 'bad' or skanky :D)

Years ago  when I first started my Nursing career, I NEVER was asked to take a drug screen. The simple fact is today it is the NORM. You want to work stay away from all illegal subs period..no matter what soapbox you are standing on. Get real folks.:smokin:(relax..just a legal smoke).:D
