consider a scientific poster (samples are online) or a concept map (probably in a text or online). The ultimate question to answer is always the same "So what"?

So, what does your information have to do with my practice?

some of the EBP posters I liked had props actually attached to it (i.e. a poster comparing ETT vs. LMAs)

you can also be creative about where you would place the poster or do a series of posters throughout the unit, like a sign in the bathroom with more details, and a sign over the HOB reminding not to use NS bullets when suctioning for example.

I'll give you my suggestion first; then you can read my rant if you choose. When I'm working on a graphics project, I will often start with a Google Images search of the topic at hand, to get the creative juices flowing. I googled "evidence based nursing," and there are many examples that should get you going. Good luck!

Having said that...

I agree with Kyrshamarks, and I find this proposition insulting two levels.

I'm transitioning into nursing after ~15 years in graphic design and marketing. Educational materials such as the poster you've been "asked" to create, if they are to achieve their intended educational goal, should be the result of proper (and time-consuming) research, planning and execution. Most larger healthcare facilities have a marketing department staffed with professionals who excel at just this sort of thing. Those professionals likely are not qualified to do your job, and you shouldn't be asked to do theirs.

If your facility doesn't have a marketing department (whose purpose, in all likelihood, is actually to produce facility-specific materials), there are numerous companies who make such materials available to healthcare organizations – the publishing houses who sell us our pricey textbooks leap to mind. Asking nursing staff to create educational materials suggests to me that your facility may not take their educational needs or their nursing staff seriously enough.

Forgive the rant; be assured I mean no offense to you. But as a graphics professional, it's demeaning to have serious work reduced to the level of a "poster-making contest."

And as a nurse, being "required" to create such materials, presumably on my own time? You can probably guess what I think about that.

I agree with both of you to some extent. Write a well researched paper on the benefit of evidenced based care. However there's nothing demeaning about creating posters. It's done at all the conferences to highlight new products, research, etc. Evidenced based care is the new buzz word and I'm sure the people who organized the poster contest had noble intentions and that was to increase awareness amongst the staff. Not everyone's in school or prepared to write a research paper- yet if they get out there and research evidenced based practice- they may be more likely to be compliant when the next evidenced based change (like not using saline to drown your patients ETT) will be better received and implemented. Of course, as I said I see your point, but nobody said it was mandatory just that everyones supposed to do one. I'm all for nurses reading journals, staying abreast of the latest changes and implementing change projects but a little awareness by a poster contest doesn't hurt the profession.

We have to do EBP posters for school. I don't know what unit you're on, but check out the bundles on the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (http://www.ihi.org) website. They're clusters of best practices that have a lot of research showing their efficacy. We did a research poster on their Central Line Bundle last year, but I think they have a Ventilator Bundle as well.

The other recommendation I have for you, is to use PowerPoint to create your poster instead of cutting out cardboard letters. If you do a google search on PowerPoint templates for scientific posters, you should find plenty! It's an easy way to make your poster look MUCH more professional and a lot less like a grade school arts & crafts project.
