POST OP CARDIAC Filters on INFUSIONS?

Published

Hi PICU or Peds-CVICU nurses,

do you have any experience with adding a filter to lines on cardiac medications ( pressors, etc) infusing via syringe pump?

what type of filter?

where in the line is the filter connected ?

what type of infusion pump?

thanks!

We don't routinely use filters, but will if required for specific infusions (e.g., amiodarone, lipids). When I use a filter I place it on the syringe.

We use the Medfusion 4000.

All of our RA lines were filtered post-op.

We have filters on every single line (carrier fluids, TPN, drips, med lines, etc.) at the end of the line that is closest to the patient, and we use Alaris pumps.

I'd check with your pharmacy about what you should be filtering. I've worked at other hospitals where pharmacy 'pre-filtered' certain meds, and we were never supposed to put a filter on the end of a med line. It seems very highly dependent on your facility's specific policy.

We also use filters at the end of each line, using Alaris pumps. The infusion pump lines don't have them, so we add a small one on at the end, but the syringe pump tubing automatically has the filter in the line.

The only thing we don't filter that I can think of is albumin, and lipids have their own special filter.
