Vanderbilt MSN 2018

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Hi! I'm starting a thread for Fall 2018. Anyone else applying too? Please comment!

Aside from future aspirations, what types of things are you including in your purpose statements? Are you repeating a little bit of information from your short answer questions without being too redundant?

@mma22664 My understanding is that schools ask where else you're applying to determine how likely you are to attend if admitted, the geographic range in which you're applying/how flexible you are in terms of moving for school, and who their competition is in general. Boston College is asking this as well. I agree that it's weird and can backfire for the applicants. :(

@KMD51 That's what I'm trying to do in my statement of purpose... (emphasize things from my short answers without sounding repetitive).

I agree with you. It's odd that they're wondering how likely we'll attend their school since applicants are obviously applying to more than 1 school.

Perfect @izquierda

I just have my statement of purpose left to finish before submitting. Getting nervous! Especially since we have so long to wait until we hear something. I was told my specialty (pediatric primary care) does not have interviews this year, which means it could be a good while before I hear anything at all. Which specialty is everyone else applying for?

I'm interested in 's MSN program, but feel the website doesn't offer much info. Not specifics anyway. Is this application cycle for admission next fall? Also, I have a BSN, and will probably apply fall of 2018 for the next class. What are my options for applying? Do we have to choose our specialty now? I'm thinking Acute Care as I am interested in critical care.

Where was the question on where else we're applying on the application? I am looking through the FNP application, and I do not see it.

What has the program been like so far? Are you in the Middle, TN area? How are the classes compared to your BSN? Have you started clinical yet? Do you find you are obtaining a wide breadth of experience?

I am applying for the pmhnp program and hoping to relocate to Clarksville.

The program is a lot of work, but it's been manageable. Just stay on top of watching the lectures and the assignments and you will do fine. I find that the exam questions are easier than BSN because they are straight forward as opposed to "NCLEX style questions" of a BSN program. In the first semester, at least in the PMHNP program, you won't get to spend much time with your psych classes because the bulk of this semester is devoted to passing advanced patho, advanced pharm, and advanced health assessment. The psych classes for this semester don't have exams or quizzes so they end up at the bottom of my to-do list. We're told that in the second and third semesters, we will focus more on clinical and our psych classes.

I'm OMTA. I'm not sure where Clarksville is, but if it is outside of the middle TN area, start looking for clinical sites yesterday. Seriously. Start reaching out to potential preceptors now so that when it comes time to submit then to clinical placement office in the spring, you'll be ready. These contracts are way more complicated to secure than one may think.

So we have to find our own clinical sites and preceptors for Vanderbilt's nursing programs? Does this apply to the prespecialty students as well?

It's the very last question on the "personal" page of the application.

TangoDeux,

I can only speak for the PMHNP program, but the prespecialty students DO NOT have to find their own clinical sites/preceptors. Prespecialty students are required to stay in the Middle TN area and the faculty sets up their clinical sites. OMTA students are responsible for finding their own sites/preceptors where they live. They submit the info to the clinical placement office who will then start the process of establishing a contract.

Thank you for the information. I thought this was the case but wanted to reconfirm since I made sure to apply to programs that help us find our clinical placement sites and perceptors. I know there is also a clinic that is run entirely by students with oversight by a experienced nurse or MD called Shade Tree which is another reason why Iam interested in Vanderbilt.

Hi Gaj418,

Is this something that changed? I am OMTA area with a BSN applying to the FNP MSN program. When I called Vanderbilt a few months ago they said they have a department that finds clinical spots for MSN students within driving distance of their home.
