I just got off the phone with a Cali. BRN rep just 5 minutes ago (it's currently 5:45 pm US EST as I am typing this) after a short inquiry of mine.

So basically, I am a nurse who graduated from a Philippine(s) nursing school back in 2007 and who was able to obtain an RN license in early 2008 via NCLEX. I never had a problem with the concurreny/curriculum issues that fellow foreign nurses are currently experiencing, I took the boards and one-shot it and got licensed.

I last renewed my Cali. RN license back in 2009 (when I was practicing up in Colorado) and it's currently lapsed for a little over a year. Just last week, I decided to renew my license in Cali. (currently licensed and working here in FL) so that I can hopefully work in the aforementioned state.

My inquiry today revolved around my concern regarding a possibility of me being denied renewal due to the fact that I was educated in the Phils. almost 6 years ago perhaps by way of audit or a records review process of some sort.

The lady I spoke with reassured me of the following:

1. ANYONE who was licensed BEFORE the stricter enforcement of the concurrency / curriculum requirements for foreign AND out-of-state nurses/nurse grads WILL STILL BE ELIGIBLE to renew their licenses.

2. The CA BRN will not "audit" or "look back" into any previously-made eligible foreign or non-California grad's curriculum which was a part of the NCLEX ATT process. And;

3. As long as the foreign-born's RN license has only been lapsed for 8 years and below, the only requirement would be to pay both the renewal and the late fees which currently amount to a total of US$205.00 (or something like that) AND to have 30 units of CEUs taken for the the Cali. BRN or for any other BoN's within the 48 contiguous US states, Alaska and Hawaii. Make sure you are truthful about the CEU requirement because the CA BRN conducts periodic audits on nurses' compliance.

She then wished me the best of luck in finding a job in California.

These being said, I think folks like me are safe from "elimination" from the CA BRN.

Hope these information help anyone who's in the same situation as I am.

Cheers!

I'm so happy to hear that since I've been also wondering about renewing my CA License that will be expired 6 months from now. I've been looking for a thread and finally got an answer about the issue. Like you I also got my degree from the Philippines migrated here in CA,got my ATT and took my NCLEX without any problem. Please let me know once you've done with your renewal.Thank you...

I am about to renew it online now. I just finished the last 2 hours of CEU's to make up for the 30 hours needed for California. The 28 hours I have were all for Florida when I renewed this year. Apparently we can use other state's CEU hours that we already did to count towards the California requirement.

Good to hear that!!! Where do you get your CEU's? right now I only have my CPR BLS and ACLS and planning to get my PALS by next month. If it's your first time to renew your license you are exempted to provide the 30 units of CEU that the CA BON is requiring us to get.

If it's your first time renewing and have passed the NCLEX within the last 2 years, you are exempted. I got my CEU's via netce.com... I like their organization and format.

Are you currently working? I have been working for 4 years now. I am planning to move to California where I got my initial license so that I could work there (hopefully) that's why I needed information straight out of the BRN.

Right now I'm having a hard time looking for a job. I just recently passed my NCLEX and try to get as many certificate as I can. I've been working in the hospital for 3 years in the Philippines as a Nurse but here they considered me as a new grad which is hard for me to get in specially hospitals in my area.Good for you,you got the experienced that you need in order for you to qualify in any position you want.

Are you only targeting hospitals? Don't you wanna try skilled nursing homes or rehab centers? Homecare or any of that sort?

I also considered skilled nursing homes, rehabs and home care but up to now I'm still waiting for there call.

What about for those who will just take the NCLEX in Cali? Are they also exempted because I graduated last 2009?

What phase are you in now on your California application? Did the CA BRN give you an ATT to challenge the NCLEX?

As I said, the above information only applies to us who have been given ATT's to sit the NCLEX and the licensure almost 5 years ago.

Good information, fjellgren. Good luck on returning to California and finding a job here. You have a better chance than most with 4 years of experience. You can also consider travel assignments.

So does this exemption apply to ONLY those who obtained their CA license?

What about those nurses who got their license outside of CA from another state?

Do you think they would be denied the endorsement process as then, their college transcripts would have to be reviewed by the CA BON and we all know what's going to happen to those application.
