I just got off the phone with a Cali. BRN rep just 5 minutes ago (it's currently 5:45 pm US EST as I am typing this) after a short inquiry of mine.

So basically, I am a nurse who graduated from a Philippine(s) nursing school back in 2007 and who was able to obtain an RN license in early 2008 via NCLEX. I never had a problem with the concurreny/curriculum issues that fellow foreign nurses are currently experiencing, I took the boards and one-shot it and got licensed.

I last renewed my Cali. RN license back in 2009 (when I was practicing up in Colorado) and it's currently lapsed for a little over a year. Just last week, I decided to renew my license in Cali. (currently licensed and working here in FL) so that I can hopefully work in the aforementioned state.

My inquiry today revolved around my concern regarding a possibility of me being denied renewal due to the fact that I was educated in the Phils. almost 6 years ago perhaps by way of audit or a records review process of some sort.

The lady I spoke with reassured me of the following:

1. ANYONE who was licensed BEFORE the stricter enforcement of the concurrency / curriculum requirements for foreign AND out-of-state nurses/nurse grads WILL STILL BE ELIGIBLE to renew their licenses.

2. The CA BRN will not "audit" or "look back" into any previously-made eligible foreign or non-California grad's curriculum which was a part of the NCLEX ATT process. And;

3. As long as the foreign-born's RN license has only been lapsed for 8 years and below, the only requirement would be to pay both the renewal and the late fees which currently amount to a total of US$205.00 (or something like that) AND to have 30 units of CEUs taken for the the Cali. BRN or for any other BoN's within the 48 contiguous US states, Alaska and Hawaii. Make sure you are truthful about the CEU requirement because the CA BRN conducts periodic audits on nurses' compliance.

She then wished me the best of luck in finding a job in California.

These being said, I think folks like me are safe from "elimination" from the CA BRN.

Hope these information help anyone who's in the same situation as I am.

Cheers!

So does this exemption apply to ONLY those who obtained their CA license?

What about those nurses who got their license outside of CA from another state?

Do you think they would be denied the endorsement process as then, their college transcripts would have to be reviewed by the CA BON and we all know what's going to happen to those application.

Yep. ONLY the California licensees before the stricter implementation of the concurrency/curriculum requirements. At least that's what according to the BRN rep I spoke to.

Specializes in emergency,medical-surgical,pediatric car.

fjellgren got your private message but my PM is disable can't reply at all. Regarding your question yeah I can speak tagalog fluently I was born and raised in the Philippines.

I passed my ca NCLEX RN last 2008 and it expired last 2011. The CA BRN said that my files are abandoned but they kept my NCLEX result. And in order for me to have a ca license I need to submit a new application for licensure by examination; transcript from school; the fingerprint clearance and a valid U.S. SSN. I would like to know if I need to submit the new requirements of CA BRN (copy of your clinical rotation schedule for your cases: assisted/actual deliveries, cord dressing and major/minor surgeries

- A complete school curriculum hundred pages or more sent directly from your nursing school to the board. (the board doesn't accept the condensed version of the curriculum

- A one page curriculum outline and academic calendar)?

Please help..

Thanks

Were you not issued a license card/number ever due to you not having a US Social Security number/card?

Be advised that my case may be different to yours because I have a US Social Security at the time that I got my license back in 2008. I was issued a license no problem and I now have a current license active again.

Please elaborate and maybe I can shed some light on your situation.

Yes, I wasnt given a license no./card bec. I dont have ssn. I have an employer now, willing to be my sponsor for a working visa but I need to have a ca license.

I will call the ca brn later to fully understand the new requirements and processing.

Thanks. ?

Well, good luck. It's really tough coming here in the US nowadays unlike before. Just do what you gotta do and you'll be okay.

Thanks for the info. I really can't find the answers on their website & couldn't get a chance to talk to them. Passed my NCLEX last 2007 & just got my SSN here in CA. For what I understood and have read from others, I need to apply for licensure and attach my NCLEX pass letter right? With the fee & change of address & name form, but do I really have to take CEU's?? Do they still need my RN Philippine license? Thanks.
